CLEMSON, SC (FOX Carolina) - A video of a Dorman High School student with Down syndrome getting his acceptance letter into Clemson is going viral.

The parents of 20-year-old Rion Holcombe turned on their camera when they got the letter in the mail and uploaded his stunned reaction to YouTube.

"My heart started to jump out of my chest so this is what happened when I got this envelope," Rion said in an interview on Thursday.

The ClemsonLIFE program is for people with intellectual disabilities and is aimed to give them an opportunity to have "postsecondary experience on a college campus," according to the program's website.

Why?

How did the parents know it would be an acceptance letter? Surely Clemson has more applicants each year for their program for the disabled than they can accept.

We didn’t know what our National Merit Scholar son’s letter from Appalachian State said until we opened it.

It looks to me like if parents know a kids already going to have problems, they'd not saddle him with a stupid name like that.

Who spells Ryan as "Rion"? That's no different than black folks coming up with dumb names like "Barackisha" or "L-a" (Ladasha)

Actually I was thinking if they put this kid in the football players’ courses, he could graduate with a regular degree.

So they have a whole new category to drive guilt nails into white kids during the no-credit mandatory diversity seminar.

To learn life skills like looking gor an appropriate job, shopping, preparing meals, sharing an apartment or other home, handling money etc. Their parents are not going to live forever. It’s a good program.

You ought to be so ashamed of your stupid post! I would suggest you ask the FR mods to delete it!

When I was applying, it was understood that a fat or large manila envelope meant acceptance. The regular envelope with one page in it was rejection or wait listing.

Why?

I know I am going to catch a lot of grief for agreeing with you, but what is the purpose of this program? How much does it cost us the taxpayers versus a typical group/work home. What extra skills do the students get from this? I could see it as part of a training set for some kind of Special Education degree, but do people with Down's syndrome really "need" to go to college.
