MIT researchers discover possible ‘vaccine’ for post-traumatic stress disorder

It’s a breakthrough that could help thousands of American soldiers returning from dangerous deployments. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology believe they may have discovered a way to create a vaccine that could prevent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

“What it’s going to do is that they’ll still have perfectly strong memories of the event. They just won’t have the bad health consequences,” said Ki Goosens, an assistant professor of neuroscience with the McGovern Institute for Brain Research.

The key is a lesser-known hormone produced by the stomach called ghrelin.

“One of the really interesting things about ghrelin that was sort of unexpected…was that the background levels of ghrelin go up if an organism has experienced a period of prolonged stress,” Goosens said. “So the more stressed you are, the more ghrelin your stomach will churn out and so in that regard, it’s a stress hormone.” …

It’s one thig to help people with PTSD or depression. It’s another thing to prevent it from happening. There’s always a trade-off. Antidepressants create chemical sociopaths. A drug that eliminates fear in a fearful situation can - obviously - create a killing machine monster.

Pharmaceutical companies - once again landing invasion forces where angels fear to tread.

Blowback is a bitch.

“Pharmaceutical companies - once again landing invasion forces where angels fear to tread.”

there next step is to create a vaccine against a disease that has not yet materialized. and after they convince the government to require vaccination (what, you never heard of Gardasil?), they then claim victory that no one has contracted the disease.

Some of the lesser known hormones have powerful effects.

One such is Oxytocin, you can feel the effects immediately. You can get it as a nasal spray. Another is Melatonin which is available over the counter.

But beware! Some hormones are extremely dangerous if misused.

This sounds like it only adresses two possible symptoms. And not even two of the more debilitating ones.

A stupid comment, if one were ever made on this forum.
The vast majority of people with PTSD struggle through life without such things. They don’t ask for or get freebies.

You have no shame. No scholarship. And no empathy.

Rush it to the Republican Congressional leaders if it works for post uproar stress disorder (PUSS).

Yeah, I think it doesn’t work that way, they can’t just change the gherkin levels before soldiers go off to battle. But now they know that gherkin plays a part, they may find ways to treat the people who do come down with PTSD, and, like they say, this can happen to anyone from a sudden traumatic event. Better to help those affected than try to prevent.

Do you know how to make a whore moan? Don’t pay her,

Seriously though a mind numbing pharmaceutical “cure!”

Cynic that I am I guess it’s time to buy stock in big pharma.

***Do you know how to make a whore moan? Don’t pay her***

Old Benny Hill joke.

What is the difference between a hormone and a vitamin?
Ans: You can’t make a vitamin! (Tata-boom!)

I might have PTSD*; one thing that makes me hesitant about getting help is that it being a mental condition could be used to strip me of basic rights. (Moreover, it is sometimes very hard to honestly look into your own state with a proper evaluation: you tend to think everything's ok when it's not, or everything's screwed up when things are perfectly fine.)

* Spent 9 years in the National Guard, deployed to Iraq; if I do it's probably toward the mild end of the spectrum.

I used to go to Juarez Mexico to a small Pharmacia to buy things like penicillin (I take it a lot since I’m at risk of endocarditis from childhood Rheumatic Fever).

I would see people lined up at one checkout to buy Testosterone injectables...sometimes they would be buying whole boxes of the stuff.

One day I asked a man who was buying a bunch of injectables why he was getting it. He explained that he was getting it for a high school football coach who gave it to his students.

I was struck dumb! How could someone be that irresponsible!?

There is no telling what harm those fools caused. :-(

Your chemical brain and chemical thought processes can be wildly influenced by chemical means. It's why people take drugs.
