Light bulb manufacturers will cease making traditional 40 and 60-watt light bulbs -- the most popular in the country -- at the start of 2014. This comes after the controversial phasing out of incandescent 75 and 100-watt light bulbs at the beginning of 2013. In their place will be halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, LED bulbs and high efficiency incandescents -- which are just regular incandescents that have the filament wrapped in gas. All are significantly more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but offer significant energy and costs savings over the long run. (Some specialty incandescents -- such as three-way bulbs -- will still be available.)
The end of old light bulbs will likely anger some consumers that are already faced with higher prices for a variety of goods. But it will also tick off tea party activists since the ban is the result of the final phase of government-mandated efficiency standards.

CFL bulbs super-suck with a third world look and feel that I call "huzz". Since I happen to be in the third world right now, I am bathing in "huzz" as we speak. Awful...
I can’t stand LED bulbs except in flashlights. I find them very harsh on the eyes.
If the 100 watt bulbs ever become a barter item, I’m rich.
According to the article lighting only makes up about ten percent of a typical electric bill. It seems like there’s been a push pretty much across the board, though, with higher efficiency standards for A/C units and washers/dryers etc — although I’m not sure if these came from within the industry or were mandated by the government.
CFLs should never have been born.
I have several pairs of the brightest LED outdoor spots I could find to light up the back yard (in case I want to see, doncha know). They're great!
I have 400+ of incandescent 40/60/75/100 watt bulbs and potlights in my basement “stores”, bought over the past 2-3yrs on weekly supermarket/hardware store shopping trips.
I’m not sure if they changed the composition of the mantle and when.
I sold them for a long time. Never had a single complaint from a customer. Most probably still have them. Some were quite elaborate lamps. All were pleasant to read by.
At some point, I think they went direct marketing or cut down the number of suppliers. Have not searched for them in a while.
Several old companies did that. For example Mirro and Presto pressure cooker parts. Guess the web did that.
I'll bet dollars to donuts that the bulbs failed due to the built-in power supply and not the LED themselves. Of course that's a distinction without any practical difference. When I build my house, I want to run a LV DC circuit for at least some of the lighting.
They can be controlled by computer to change color temperature at will, come on when you take a step or walk in a room, they can be put almost anywhere because heat is not a factor. LED lighting can be run on low voltage circuits or batteries.
LED lighting is going to change how we think about lighting.
Have you played with these? ;-)
Maybe when they get induction chargers more advanced you can put a LED light anywhere in the field without wires.
Maybe I’m confusing LED lights with something else, but there’s a certain type of car headlight that is bluish-white and extremely bright, and I think they are blinding to oncoming drivers and very dangerous. I had some Christmas tree lights with that same blinding bluish white light, and threw them away. They had no softness at all and just didn’t look right on a Christmas tree. But I love LEDs on flashlights because what I want with a flashlight is brilliant, short-term illumination, not an easy-on-the-eyes, comfortable cozy effect like I want with regular lamp light bulbs.
You’ve been here five years an you just concluded it’s only on “Some days” the government tries to ruin our lives? You’ve got some catchin’ up to do. That is the raison d’être for the entire government now.
That's exactly what I did the last two weeks to keep our tankless water heater from freezing up.
HID xenon headlights, I s’pose. I don’t like them either.
Like your flashlight those lights are great for the driver but not for oncoming vehicles
I’m a fan of the GE and Sylvania halogen replacement bulbs. Incandescent, no mercury, no circuitry, dimmable.
They are available in various wattages and also in Reveal versions.
