The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Where do you dry them?

You know this will be the first “spring” planning I have done. I’ve made a sheet telling me when to start seeds of what and I think I remember the peas, of which I have three varieties, have to be started very early, too, like next week. I’ll need to study that paper as I haven’t looked at it in the few weeks since I made it. Too many veggies on there to remember each one without that paper.
With lots of cover and mulch those veggies can survive a lot. It will be interesting to see. There’ a book somewhere around, but I can’t recall the name exactly about 4 season gardening in one of the New England states.
One of the methods involves using a “hot bed”. Basically you use manure/compost pile, put some boards on top, and set the potted plants on the boards, then cover it all up.
The heat produced by the compost helps keep the pots warm enough to continue growing as they drink in the winter sun too.
In the house. I have parachute cord high up on the walls streched across rooms, and when I harvest, it's almost difficult to walk through with all the leaves hanging down.
I only get away with that because I'm a single guy.
I did do some experiments with sun drying some on the chain link fence this fall, but I'm still not sure about that.

I use my garden calendar to write down when I plan to plant everything and other garden tasks and then note on the calendar when I do it. That way I can see everything that has to be done for the month. I also use the notebook, so I've got planting dates, &ct... in two places.
This is the time of year to organize all that.
I need to get a 2014 calendar, now that I think on it.

I did that - went to a place on the web to print each month of the calendar - there is enough space on each day to write what I did. I printed this December, too, since that is when I’m starting some seeds.
At least you remember where the paper is. I made one and misplaced it before I got it filed. Still hoping to run across it as the cleaning project continues.
This was my first seed order in about 5 yrs. We still have plenty in our freezer from the past. This place I bought from really worked out great, lots more seeds in the packet then were supposed to be.
Excuse me please if I dont make any sense today, I am on cold meds on top of my regular stuff. 2X whammy. I went to the Sick Peoples Convention(dr office) the other day and picked up what they had. I really shouldn’t be behind a keyboard in this condition.
If it hadn't been raining, I would have taken it to meet Mr. Sledgehammer.
I'll pick up a gimme calendar at one of the local businesses.

Nice to hear from you. Would you mind telling me a little more about your garden? Do you use raised beds, pots, or just a patch of ground?
I really liked those potatoes and peanuts that you told me about from the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. I’ll be expanding the space for both of those. They both did very well.
Thanks again for that tip and the on-line mega store. Those containers are just what I am looking for, and I had really given up till you mentioned them to Marcella.
It’s too early to plant any thing for transplanting, but I am going to plant a few seeds in Pots to fill in the spaces I have available for growing indoors stuff to eat.
It must add quite a scent to the rooms. Is it pleasant? :)
December 19 is the start day of all of them except onion. That time runs through January 2, except for onions and they are Dec. 19 for the last day. In six days, I will be busy. I have plenty of seed starter mix and gobs of 5 ounce paper cups. Will only take several minutes to set up lamp and stand. The hardest part is setting up the dog fence in front of the lamp so the Yorkie doesn't have play time among them and dig them up for fun.
That knee stand I got will allow me to be on my knees dealing with those cups and not kill me knees and allow me to get up very easily.

Hey now, single guy. I have all sorts of harvest hanging from the kitchen ceiling, and cabinets, and stacked on the refrigerator during harvest. We still have hubby’s garlic and stuff like that hanging around.
I already have my 2014 garden calendar, and started that process, but I have plenty of time to finish.
Sick People’s Convention. LOL I am going to steal that phrase. Long as the fingers can stay on the keys....
My neighbor just shakes her head when she walks into my house. Her house, of course, is magazine photograph perfect, with lace doilies under the china lamps.

My target date for in ground planting is March 1. I want my seedling to be about 6weeks old at the point, which means to them in mid Jan. I could gamble on the weather, but covering young seedlings is a pain in the boohind, so I go with Mar.1 each year. If I start my seeds any earlier, they will be rootbound in these little Jiffy trays by March.
I just stick with what has worked for me in the past.
