The Wallie nearest me, has only a *token* section of groceries in their store. I won’t waste gas to go there b/c of the distance, but if I am in the area I stop b/c their dairy is a lot lot cheaper than regular markets.

I think Costco has the cheapest milk...but I don’t have one nearby and let my membership expire.

“I liked Stop & Shop when I lived there. Related to my Safeway at the time, much like them. Closest but nice. I hated ShopRite. 1 of the early oversized warehouse type stores, but also close. Bigger was the Big Y built while I lived there, but I liked that fine. Just too far, also. Next to a Wal-Mart before they expanded to food.”

Sounds like you lived in Western Mass, if the Big Y is any indication. Survived a few ice storms in that neck of the woods.

It is probably owned by a mobster. Most restaurants that only take cash are money laundering operations. There are a few very good Italian places in Boston that only take cash. It is a good way to hide proceeds from illegal gambling, etc.

We have some IGA stores in Michigan. some are nice, some are dives, it's pretty much a crapshoot. It depends on the franchisee. One of the smaller independent chains in Michigan, Spartan stores seems to be more consistent with price quality and selection. I'll go to a spartan store before a Meijers or Walmart. The prices are higher at the Spartan store, but I live in the country and the spartan is 3 minutes away whereas the chains are 20 minutes away. Once you factor in gas, the savings from the big chains are pretty much moot. Plus with the Spartan store you don't have to reenact the Bataan death march to get everything on your shopping list.

HAH! How about that drug chain GENOVESE? Can’t get scarier than that, not far from NY either.

Lou Mitchells has been around for 85 years. It's well known and very popular.

In May 2002, the Nationwide Route 66 restoration program was launched at Lou Mitchell's.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

I love IGAs...they are usually indie grocers [non chain] in small tows where the butcher knows your name. Plus I love supporting small, local businesses rather than a big, faceless chain.

They also employ many people from the local towns. My wife worked there at one time and our three kids all worked there when going through high school. We know the owner, Doug, very well and they play the coolest music, alternative and such that you normally don't hear in a supermarket. They also have the best selection craft beer in our side of the city.

PS- It’s good business practice also. No CC payments to banks. The airport at home where I fly also does not take CC’s. If you do, you have to pay a fee. In a note to renters they stated it costs them $35,000 a year in bank fees to accept CC’s so they don’t take them anymore unless you pay a surcharge.

Our only 2 choices where we live are Food Lion and Weis. The Weis is extremely convenient and clean but don’t like to have more than 2 checkout people at any given time.

Food Lion is a pain to get to so we don’t go very often, but I’ve never had a problem with it.

Weis seems very hit or miss in that regard outside of their original turf. Their flagship stores are usually quite good... then the further you get from central pa, the worse they get.

I think Trader Joe’s is the worst excuse for a supermarket I have ever seen.

If you like to cook, don’t shop there because everything is already cooked or already seasoned.

i have been in North Carolina since last March... i have to say, i miss the supermarkets that are in the SF Bay Area... i am from the South Bay, and the supermarkets here in NC do not compare with the few supermarkets i frequented in Cali...

Well Eeor then don't shop there. They have the happiest customer base of any grocery chain anywhere, with the possible exception of Wegmans. My wife says going to Trader Joe's is like going to a party - everybody is always in such a good mood….shoppers and staff.

I live in South Central PA and the Weis closest to me is a proper dump that looks like a 1960s relict. I’ve seen much nice ones, though.
