I love IGAs...they are usually indie grocers [non chain] in small tows where the butcher knows your name. Plus I love supporting small, local businesses rather than a big, faceless chain.

Some CC’s offer money back, some give air miles, some give other benefits. It’s the paying off at the end of the month that counts.

“Aldi reminds me of a grocery store you would see in a communist bloc country 30 years ago, style-wise.”

I believe Aldi is a European import, so you may be on to something.

We have a lot of Wegmans in VA and MD. Maybe they’l work their way down to you. The best supermarket...no doubt.

I’m glad Hannaford’s isn’t on the list. They are mostly in NH and Vermont. It’s the only place I can buy *Maine* potatoes; and their house-brand of pancake syrups are excellent. They are a lot like Stop & Shop but closer to a Whole Foods, IMO.

ALDI only deals in cash. Not sure though of debit cards. But definitely no credit cards.

Debit cards are fine. I only use Aldi on occasion when I have to pick up a few things.

Not a bit surprised that Wal-Mart ranked #2. The wife swears by their low prices but only buys name brand canned goods, oils, and dressings.

On at least two occasions I have left a cart full of groceries rather than continue to wait on line while a stupid cashier tries to resolve a problem. Meanwhile no one has sense enough to open up other registers and get the lines moving.

Publix on the other hand is always a pleasant experience and carries quality produce and meats. Service is excellent too. Unfortunately their prices tend be higher on everything.

Nine times out of ten, if I’m in WalMart I wind up using the self scan. They may have 2 dozen registers, but only 3 or 4 of them manned at any one time. I rarely do a big shopping there.

Funny you mention sauerkraut...I went to a Harris Teeter the other day (not my usual one) and I could not find the kraut. So I asked one of the people who worked there. She did not know what sauerkraut was.

There’s a famous cafe in Chicago that only accepts cash. No cards, no checks. they’re always busy. It’s located right at the beginning of Rt.66 near the train station. It’s called Lou Mitchells.

I liked Stop & Shop when I lived there. Related to my Safeway at the time, much like them. Closest but nice. I hated ShopRite. 1 of the early oversized warehouse type stores, but also close. Bigger was the Big Y built while I lived there, but I liked that fine. Just too far, also. Next to a Wal-Mart before they expanded to food.

Gotta disagree about Wal-Mart. They always have excellent prices, wide variety, cleanliness, and the entire store has every other selection a person can generally want. With the exception of meat prices and deli, and Krogers wins there in our area, Wal-Mart makes no sense on this list.

Krogers is my favorite regular grocery store, followed by Jungle Jims for it’s really off the wall and international selections, it’s amazing fresh produce section, and it’s off-the-charts beer and wine selections top every store I’ve ever seen.
