I liked Stop & Shop when I lived there. Related to my Safeway at the time, much like them. Closest but nice. I hated ShopRite. 1 of the early oversized warehouse type stores, but also close. Bigger was the Big Y built while I lived there, but I liked that fine. Just too far, also. Next to a Wal-Mart before they expanded to food.

Sounds like you lived in Western Mass, if the Big Y is any indication. Survived a few ice storms in that neck of the woods.
