The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

The Megastore is in Illinois and doesn’t have a store in Texas so they don’t have to collect Texas sales tax. If they had a branch store in Texas, they would have charged me Texas sales tax.
As far as my being 80, I don’t know what that means. I have a lot of long blond hair and a sexy body and plan to run for Miss America when I’m 90. :o)

I did not articulate well: Does Texas have high income tax for Texas wage earners or are Texas property taxes high compared to other states? Or does Texas government just know how to balance their budgets?

1. Texas has NO income tax.
2. Building a house here is cheaper than most states - in other words a bigger house for less money.
3. Property taxes are set by each county. In my county, when you become 70 (think it’s 70), your property tax is frozen and you pay that same amount every year, it does not go up any more.
4. Texas does have a sales tax and I don’t know the percentage that is, but it is not excessive.
5. Our Texas constitution requires us to always have a balanced budget - we cannot spend more than we have. The legislature meets every two years and cannot spend more than the Treasurer allows them to spend in order to stay within the Texas state income.
Will Do. We are a very neighborly group. Friends from near and far - helping each other in our quest to grow food to eat and lovely flowers, as well as a little discourse on other things of interest.
Repotting may happen later this afternoon, as I just got notice that I'm to be kidnapped to babysit the grandkids today.
This is a good thread and there are lots of folks here that know a whole lot about different things.

5 gallon buckets make good planters for deep rooted plants. If you can find sheetrock mud buckets, the mud comes out real easy by slamming then on the ground or bending them.
I have no experience at all in these matters. The only person I know who has won’t eat exotic Americana stuff. (She knows how to field-dress and prep any sort of mammal or fish.) I offered her some purple bell peppers from the garden and she doesn’t eat anything that is a color it isn’t supposed to be. I wonder how the meat gets tar black? Blood gets black when the stomach’s digestive juices act upon it before it’s excreted, but re: beavers, I have no idea. Will look it up and report back if I find anything.

greeneyes, that three pack of soft plastic containers for patio/deck is in this order. Remember, the three pack was $12 and that is the best $12 I could have spent for containers. And, I did get two sets. There are plenty of drain holes and each one has a brass grommet so the plastic isn't going to split where the drain holes are. The plastic is strong and when you open one, it stands up, does not flop down.
There is a large, poster type heavy cardboard instruction sheet. The printing is very large, no way to miss what they have on there. They tell you what type veggies to grow in each size container and how to do it. Knowing what they suggest to grow in each one might help some of you decide if these containers are for you:

Now, I have to decide which plants go in which container because I have two stacks of hard plastic containers as well as these softer six containers. I know each of the three blackberry plants has to go in a certain kind hard plastic container but which ones do I put all the plants that will come out of seeds? This will take some thinking to decide which goes where.
When I started this last year, I had NO containers.
At least now, I'm back home with a real computer and no children to deal with. Love grandkids. Best part is giving them back to Mom.

Thank you for the information....Texas is doing it right and should be a model for other states!
Income tax is totally insane, as productive members of society are fiscally punished.
For now I grow pumpkin, tomato and peppers. Participate in a small pasture run egg operation, but am getting geared up for heirloom seed production. I have always supported myself through agriculture. The most exotic was shiitake mushroom (also the most lazy), the most exciting was cut flowers, but around 2003 the economy tanked in my area and the flowers quit paying the bills.
