The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Excellent find! I have one similar (without the heating element) that I got as army surplus years ago (yes, we used them as medical sterilizers). They are heavy duty and last forever!
The first thing I thought of are the 5 gallon buckets you can buy for $5 apiece at Lowe's/Home Depot. I've used them in the past. You just need to drill drainage holes in the bottom.
Oh, that is so neat. What a great find. Now I want one...even though I have a pressure canner.
We have a revised forecast since bedtime last night, downward spiral to 26 on Wed night and new lower highs till then. Ouch! And rain with it. Double ouch!

“I dont use much in the way of cages either.”
I will get one more 13 inch across barrel with the plastic cage in it for another T squash in spring. That cage on the one I have, was a super thing to have to control the T squash to keep it upright and off the deck. It grew all the way up inside the cage then grew down all the way to the floor. I think it’s got to be 9 feet long now.
I used metal stakes covered in something green from Lowes to attach tomato plants to and will get some more of those for spring since I will have more tomato plants. This time, I’ll plant the tomato plants I grow from seed the right way as I screwed that up this time by not planting enough of the plant “underground”.
I’m in mid-south and freezing my toes off. Global warming, indeed! Hmph!
I always wondered how teachers in one-room schools organized their materials and lesson plans. I’d become unhinged.
Thanks for reading recommendation. Have just downloaded from digital library!
Oops. Nevermind.
My forecast has changed - will have to cover plants Monday evening and keep them covered through Thursday night when temp. goes back up:
Monday night: Overcast with rain, then a chance of rain after midnight. Fog overnight. Low of 32F. Winds from the North at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 70% with rainfall amounts near 0.6 in. possible.
Tuesday night: Overcast in the evening, then partly cloudy. Fog overnight. Low of 34F with a windchill as low as 27F. Winds from the NNW at 10 to 15 mph.
Wednesday night: Clear. Low of 28F. Winds from the NNE at 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday night: Clear. Low of 32F. Winds less than 5 mph.
I'm in W. WA State. I plant tomato seeds in Jiffy peat pellets about March 15 and grow them inside for about two months. I grow twice as many seedlings as I truly want. I plant 1/2 them outside about May 15. If they die from cold, I still have the second 1/2 inside; in any case, I plant the second 1/2 outside about June 1 or so. I have had good luck with the early girl variety.
I got 90 pounds of food this year from 1000 rowfeet. Not great but not bad. If I had weeded more, I would have got considerably more.
It’s encouraging to hear that your indoor peppers do well. I hope mine do too.
I’ll post pictures as it grows/flowers/fruits (I hope). I want to bring them outside eventually, we can put transplants out in the ground here as early as mid-February (depending on temps of course).
My forecast has changed again and the only night below freezing is what you said. Mine says Wednesday night 28 degrees and all the rest of the nights now are above freezing. Who knows what the forecast will say by Tuesday.

You do what JRandomFreeper, Johnny, does, grow a bunch more seedlings than he needs in case some die for whatever reason. I have trouble thinking about doing that as I can’t stand to think of dumping the extra seedlings that are alive. I have to get over that and grow more seedlings than I need. I’m new to growing this year so I need to do what you guys do.

“You could always feed the extras to the squirrels. ;)”
The freaking squirrels can starve to death. I wish you would come get them all out of those two trees. I will kill them for sure if TSHTF.
