The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I’ve been happy with my Garmin, but it is getting old, it uses 2008 maps. Map updates are not free for this one, and are 1/2 the cost of a new unit. We plan on buying a new one, but like most stuff, I don’t know when it will be. It does come in handy since we dont know the area here, particularly the Woodlands.

We have been at our overnight low of 39 for several hours now. It is still raining lightly. I haven’t been out to the rain gauge to see what we have gotten over the last few days. I need to get out into town...yuck!

We are at 1 degree above freezing. I will have to go pick up grand daughter at running club after school and get Rx at the pharmacy. Yuck and double yuck.

If the sun would shine, I could get happy, no matter the temp. Grey days are awful for me. I can only stand so much of the cabin and the internet. Fortunately I have found a site for woodworkers that is taking days to explore.

Tomorrow at 6:30am my wife gets knee surgery, and we are supposed to be sunny, so tomorrow will be a major change from the past week even though the temp will be the lowest yet. The surgery is minimally invasive, they say. She will be back on her feet the next day. So they say. They wouldn’t lie, would they? No, not a doctor trying to sell a surgical procedure. Yes, I have a problem with surgeons.

$140 dollars at Sears gets you a Garmin with permanent updates.

I don't really need updates as I don't travel that much. I don't expect roads in this area to go away or have others added.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger - I've lived here a long time and there hasn't been a reason for me to travel around The Woodlands. When my son was here last Christmas, he took me to some great steak place buried somewhere in The Woodlands. I only know where all the hospitals in the Woodlands are and they are lined up along Hwy. 45 in The Woodlands - can see them from 45.

I don't think it froze here because I didn't go to bed until 1 am and it was 40 at that time. I just took Prissy to the groomer that is a block from my house and it is very lightly raining. Checked my rain gauge and I have 3 inches of rain in there and it had an inch in there yesterday so I left it in there so I've had 2 inches since then.

The new portion of 1484 out to our house is not on my GPS maps!

I need it in the Woodlands because you cant see where anything is at for all the trees. But there are a lot of businesses there that are not in this town, so I persevere.

I had an overnight low of 39.

I haven’t been out to the rain gauge yet.

Just a quick check online reveals a Garmin 4.3in screen w/lifetime maps for $79.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/garmin-nvi-40lm-4-3-gps-with-lifetime-map-updates/3054038.p?id=1218374934525&skuId=3054038

That’s gettin pretty cheap. I paid $195 at Sam’s for the one I have back in early 09.

That Garmin you posted is not the latest model. The latest one is “Garmin nüvi 52”. I also got the 5 inch screen instead of the 4.3 inch screen. A smaller screen would be okay if the passenger was looking at it but since I’ll be driving as well as checking, I got the biggest one.

I don’t remember what is wrong with the wife’s knee if I even knew. Wait, is this connected to her leg collapsing on the way to the car one day?

A few years ago a surgeon had to go in my right knee and clean the arthritic crap out and put my kneecap back in place as it was out of its groove. I was NOT walking the next day, my leg was up on a pillow to keep it elevated and in a couple of days I could walk on it. There was little pain right after the surgery as long as I didn’t try to walk on it. Because he had to spend more time in there to get the knee cap back where it should be, it swelled more than just a surgery to get arthritic stuff out.

Wind Chill and plants: In order to get colder due to wind chill, the object the wind hits must have flesh and blood. Plants do not have flesh and blood, therefore it does not affect them.

However, if the wind is persistent over time, the plant will dry out some. If there is no moisture with the wind so the plant begins to dry out, giving the plant water would help it.

My husband was just sure plants would get colder due to wind chill and I don’t think I ever convinced him they wouldn’t. Plants do not get colder with wind chill - gotta have flesh and blood for that to happen.

At this point, I don't care about the plants. I'm drinking hot chocolate and staying warm inside. The plants can freeze for all I care. I've done all for them that I'm going to do today.

“I’m drinking hot chocolate and staying warm inside. The plants can freeze for all I care.”

I took Yorkie, Prissy, to groomer this morning which is one block from my house, then went back to get her and she has been sleeping all day at the lower end of my reclines all snuggled up to my leg. She is used to blasting out the back glass door into the garden to bark at squirrels and a cat that chances by, but she’s not wanting out today.

I covered strawberries and turnips and carrots yesterday and that’s it but it didn’t freeze last night so maybe I will make it through tonight but the forecast shows more below freezing the rest of the week but maybe that won’t happen. Right now, at about 6 pm, it’s 43 outside. How cold are you right now?

The lying weatherstation over at the base says 50F, but it's more like 45F here.

Funny you should ask. I'm trying to integrate the temperature with the PBX I've been building, so I can have a time and temperature number to dial. I've got the time thing working. Now for temp....
