The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
My latest forecast is 32 tonight, Monday. I don't think it will go to that with my solidly brick enclosed area but I can't chance all those strawberry plants freezing, so I opened a new row cover package that is 12x10 and didn't open it fully so it is three layers and put that over the strawberries.
I took the long squash off the plant and it is 20 inches long and see two more developing. Yesterday, I saw one, now there are two. Hopefully it won't get to 32 or it will be so short lived at 32 that plant won't freeze.
Yesterday, I was in a personal botanical garden (it wasn't a public garden). It is completely enclosed with a KOI pond and exotic plants, some very tall to the ceiling and the ceiling looks to be 2 stories tall with a solid plastic ceiling to let in light. It was in the 40s outside but the garden was a perfect temp. Around that house were bearing fruit trees including tropical fruit I don't know. I saw growing lemons and oranges and the others I couldn't identify. He told me the names but there were several so I don't remember them.
I'll probably marry this man to get that botanical garden and all those fruit trees. :O) :O) Don't get your hopes up, ha ha. It was a beautiful place.
As you say, it surely is not a picture book. It is a working book with direct instructions to know how to do those tasks.
Ooh, Marcella..I bet it's the architect, isn't it?
No.
It’s the doctor.
No.
Hmmm... Somebody new!
check mail.
It warmed up today to 3 degrees above freezing. So I hustled around and took out the compost and trash. Checked the winter garden - it's ok under the row covers. Checked the perennials/herbs - it's kinda sheltered so it looks ok. Hubby's strawberries survived. He usually covers them with straw, but hasn't yet - don't know what he's doing there - 100 plants that he spent all of spring 2013 picking off flowers.
I harvested some lavender, rosemary, parsley, chives, and persimmons today. Covered the herb garden with one row cover - it has a bunch of leaves in it, so I figure that was a little help against the cold.
Continued with my fall/early spring cleaning today. Moved a stuffed rocking chair, and lo and behold there was the sack of winter rye that disappeared. Next time we get some 40 degree weather, I'm going to try to plant it.
Auggie - hope the weather lets you get your garlic in on Thanksgiving.
Oh, shoot, I didn’t cover the turnips and carrots.
Okay, I opened another package of row cover and went out there again, it’s still raining lightly, and covered the turnips and carrots with I hope enough cover to keep them from freezing. It is 6:15 pm and the temp out there is 47 degrees right now.
When I got home yesterday from the botanical garden, I heard three beeps on something going off. I finally traced the weak sound to my indoor/outdoor unit that gives me the temp. outside and inside. Swell, its batteries went dead just when this cold was about to happen. I just dropped the groceries I had in my arms (stopped at store on my way home so I wouldn’t have to get out in today’s bad weather), and put new batteries in it.

There was a chance for show and freezing “ice pellets” last night and today but that didn’t happen and it just shows 50
% chance of rain tomorrow - nothing frozen coming down.
I’m not sure about Johnny with his being farther north than I am. I do know he has his long pants on.
So, I had a TomTom GPS to guide me where I needed to go. I had to go to a new place in Huntsville about a month ago, and the TomTom wouldn't go to the map, it just stayed on the main picture of TomTom. When I got where I was going, it turned on and showed me where I was - big -——— deal.
So, yesterday I need to take a road I haven't been on to get over to a big highway. I fought with the TomTom to get it on and it took me around the world in the country to get to that highway. There was nothing on this country road, no restaurant, nothing but manufacturing plants and they weren't open as it was Sunday. When I finally came to something open, a nice lady told me where to go and that freaking TomTom was not sending me there.
The TomTom became the freaking squirrels. Twice it had screwed up, that time not coming on and yesterday sending me miles out of the way. And that wasn't all it did. I would look down to see the road and it had turned itself to some picture and kept doing that so I couldn't even see the road on it. I jerked it out of its hookup after the lady told me where to go.
Today, I ordered a Garmin nüvi 52 5-Inch Portable Vehicle GPS (US). I cannot get to places I have not been before unless it is fairly direct. It was working when I went to rightly’s house or I may have never gotten there and back.
I can get turned around easily and not know where I am. Unless the sun was shining, I wouldn't know north/south/west/east. I hate being like this but that's just the way it is. I do know how the stuff works on my car now.
Well, maybe you should do a little research on navigation using the night time sky/stars etc. You know as back up in case your new GPS doesn’t work.
Hubby took care of the grocery shopping and picked up meds at the pharmacy for me today, so I didn’t have to get out in the cold except for the few minutes I spent on the garden. I am lucky that way.
I make the list. He sticks to the list. When I go to the store, I make out the list, but then I see stuff that I didn’t think of, so I don’t stick to the list. We stick to the budget better when he goes.LOL
Actually..... it did get over 40F here today.

I think the most of it was up towards the panhandle, and in west TX. Weatherman says Central TX might get a few flakes at 3am, but it won't stick.
We have no percip in the forcast for tonight, but we are again below freezing. Means I have to wear shoes and socks in the basement or my feet get very very cold, even though we put down carpeting and pad over the concrete.
