The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
You are more than welcome. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Had I known it was coming, I would have covered the winter garden which has row-covers with straw, and the perennials with row covers and straw. I was very distracted and failed to note the weather.
Hubby told me about 9 or 10 pm. No way I was going out in the freezing weather, in the dark with a flashlight to cover up anything. The plants are on their own. The dark is one thing, but combined with the cold -forgetaboutit.
-I woke up to a chilly 17 degrees this AM. We are now experiencing a heat wave of 32 degrees. Comparatively speaking, you are experiencing a tropical heat wave.LOL-
Just to reinforce that statement, we did have the a/c on kicking. The inside temp only got down to 56. We like it cool, or cold, but sunny, which we haven’t had since mid-week, I think. We get by with two space heaters, plus one in the bathroom for my wife. We do know that the central heat works in case we ever do need it.
No heaters in the bedrooms, exercise room, or store room-most of them are underground, and cool even in the summer.
Latest forecast is 23* on Wed night.
I have a tomato that’s been growing in my bedroom for 4 years now.
I wouldn’t recommend them as a houseplant, really. With mine, the vines keep growing longer until they collapse on themselves, then they branch and start growing longer again. I currently have a 5 foot tall mess of vines, with leaves growing on the last 3 feet only, making the rest look dead even though it isn’t. And it doesn’t get enough light to produce fruit more than once in a blue moon.
However, it’s very handy for taking cuttings in the spring.
Our forcast for Mon. Tues. Wed.
Highs: 35 33 30 Lows 25 17 19
I would like to have a little global warming please; enough with the teeny ice age.
my mother always said that plants left to lay on the ground have their tomatoes ripen quicker...becuz of the warmth I guess...however, in my garden, if I do that, they get nibbles and bites and rot a bit too much to my liking...
I want tomatoes like in the Godfather...all strung up nice and neat....lol

My down the street neighbor ordered this winter veggie collection, and split it with me. It's so cold and drizzly here right now, I am not the least bit interested in planting them.
BTW, I was wondering about Cilantro, so, thx for mentioning it disliking the cold.
I burned off the weed patch yesterday. If it doesn’t rain I guess I’ll plant garlic on Thanksgiving.
It's a thumb in the eye kind of thing. ;)

“Actually, quite a few of us here on the FR garden threads swap seeds. It’s worked out well.”
That’s great! I just haven’t see much talk about it in the weekly gardening threads, though I seem to recall that you’ve sent some seeds to folks (Marcella?). I guess I need to slow down and read more carefully.

I need some cilantro for these tomatoes from my garden, and I don't want to go to HEB
Oh, and also, I’m sure lots of people think I, to, am quite the horse’s ass..
Well, this ain't France, and I don't care how he did it there. I dislike negative people, and that's all he is.

No, that is not the book I have if I still have it. The one you and I have is not on Amazon as I looked at every book with that name and there are many but not the one we have.
Greeneyes, I have “Country Living”, I think that is the name, that is huge with how to skin animals, build chicken coops, and everything else connected with country living without power. I think I remember it did consider there was no power. This book has been in print since before Moses I think, and new parts get added to it. I likely bought mine around 2000 and it was an update.
