The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

My first trip to Mo was my first out of the southeast. I left the gulf coast in a nice renta car wearing a short sleeve shirt. By the time I got to St Louis it was cold and snowing a little. I went west from there on 44 I think it was. That was not too bad either. But when I left that road for a two lane towards Jefferson City, things got more serious. It began to really snow after the sun went down and I could not see well. I got behind a truck that knew the road and followed him. I finally got where I was going near FT. Lenard Wood about 2am. Lots of snow on frozen ground, 7* and me wearing a short sleeve shirt.

I do own a jacket now, and just bought a long sleeve shirt to wear on cold days. Who knows, maybe we will use the heating system in the house sometime in the future. I’m getting soft in my Golden Years, or Rusty Years seems more appro.

I dont think I can help much because you have a different variety of veggies and staggered harvest times.

I start mater and pepper seeds in mid Jan with the goal of planting them by Mar 1st. I use Jiffy seed soil and feed with fish emulsion, 1T per gallon, every few days after they get an inch tall.

That Montgomery Planting chart is just what I need! I have printed it and will use it. You just made my planting veggies much easier. Never leave this gardening section of FR ‘cause I need you here.

We still have some small tomatoes and blooms here in central Texas. Yesterday they were all green, so hopefully tomorrow some will begin turning red. The volunteer squash was hit by the cold and we’ll be putting it in the compost heap. The pepper plants were not affected by the freeze.
oh some outer leaves were, but the leaves surrounding the peppers were fresh and so were the peppers.

The feral tobacco plant with a lighter for scale. I don't know how to tell it that this is the wrong time of year for it.

“I don't know how to tell it that this is the wrong time of year for it.”

Plants are like people - each one has a mind of its own separate from its DNA.

I have another squash growing in the big “T” squash plant. If a flower opens and then falls off, there is no squash made. A bunch of them did fall off and I don't know why. Of course I planted it at the wrong time but didn't care, just wanted to see if it would get killed by borers if grown in a bucket on the deck. It has lived without death by insect so I won't plant any squash other than this one. Maybe I'll get more squash when it's planted at the right time.

I watered plants yesterday since it has been a while since it has rained. Appears we will get rain Friday and maybe Saturday.

The little pods on the Sesame plants have not grown one bit longer. They are still tiny compared to a picture I've seen of a long pod. They are not over an inch long if that long. I think that big pot will have something else growing in it when I plant for spring.

I ordered three Ouachita Blackberry Plants and they will be shipped in early December. Those plants do get fairly large and produce for a number of years so each one will have to have a fairly large container - the containers I just got at 15 inches across and 14 inches deep should be fine. They are two year old plants and according to the instructions, may have blackberries next year, 2014.

The only item I don't have for next year now is the dwarf lemon tree and rightly says they will be in this area early in spring.

One can sit in a chair and look at all the seeds offered by companies, and the temptation is to order a zillion types of seeds - which one will never plant. Ordering is easy, planting is hard. I tried to keep that in mind as I ordered. If I ordered it, I'm planting it.

I finished making a list of all the seeds I now have and listed when to plant each one according to the planting chart for this county that rightly sent me. My list of seeds does not include all the ones I have ordered in the past week or so. Some may be in my mail box now. I'll check it today.

I’m trying to convince hubby to put up some rain barrels to collect some of the humongous amount of water we get from our roof. wish me luck. I know just where to put some.

There’s always a rebel in a group, don’t tell this one anything, it will do as it pleases. You may be smoking rebel tobacco in the near future.

I’m bad when it comes to seeds. They look so nice, and I’m such a wit, I’ll buy some that I’ve never heard of. But I do plant them, just to see what they look like. I’m getting ready to move some of my pepper plants into the garage, just hope the golf cart stays where it’s supposed to. I need to put them in a spot where I can hang a grow light so they think they’re still outside. They really look nice, right now. I have NM, jalapeno, purple ?, Indian really powerful one, havenero (2). I’m thinking of Cheyenne, but they have so little flavor, but may dry them then turn them to powder. johnny, do you dry and powder your NM peppers?

Nope. I roast 'em and eat 'em green. Usually stuffed with a filling.

I wind up collecting seeds even without ordering from a catalog. Like the pumpkin seeds I wound up prepping for next year. Someone just handed me a pumpkin last week to get rid of it....

SEEDS, GLORIOUS SEEDS!

Seeds were in my mail box, glorious seeds. I’ll need to get some more good containers and that will be it except for getting more potting soil mix.

Now, I’ll get these seeds written down tomorrow on my list along with when to plant them, and that will finish the organizing so I know what I’m doing. January will start the seed/grow light period and that is going to last for several months.

This has all been quite a learning curve but I think I’m turning the corner and kind of, sort of, almost. maybe, know what I’m doing.

Oh, ok, I’ll do that too. Do you freeze them for future use? I’m growing some “huge” jalapenos so I can stuff them too. At least the seed package says they’re huge. The ones I get from HEB, I stuff with cheese, wrap with bacon and bbq, when we have company. BBQing them seems to remove some of the heat. The northerners love them. I’ve tried a lot of stuffings in them and company likes them too. The fellows with beer and we girls with various wines. Even on who likes her’s with m I l k. ??

I don't freeze the whole roasted peppers, but I do freeze the pepper puree sometimes.

Sometimes flowers are all one sex and don’t get pollinated. Usually have some of each on the next round. I don’t do much with squash, but the first year I planted a zuke, and had more than I wanted from just one plant.

Truthfully, I didn’t like the squash bugs either. If I decided to plant some squash, I would try the kind you are planting, but I really don’t care for squash, so chances are, I’ll just leave it to Hubby.

He plants zukes and summer squash.
