Terrible twilight of Doris Day
The Daily Mail Online ^ | 10-26-13 | Tom Leonard

Stand outside the huge gates to Doris Day’s fortress-like home in California’s beautiful Carmel Valley and you can sometimes hear the sound of the canine companions who share the Hollywood star’s life.

It’s been some years since Day, now 91 and so reclusive many may be surprised to learn she is still alive, used to steal through the streets of the nearby town of Carmel in the middle of the night on a regular basis.

Locals would watch in surprise as she rounded up stray dogs and emaciated cats, bundling them in her car to take home and look after them.

At one time she had close on 50 dogs rampaging through her house, some of them piling on to her kingsize bed to sleep at night. People would leave abandoned pets at the gates and Doris, one of the biggest stars in Hollywood history, never turned them away.

She once refused to tell a interviewer exactly how many animals lived with her — people would think her ‘wacko’, she said.

The pert, fresh-faced and fun-loving blonde won Oscars romancing Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk and for her belting rendition of the song Que Sera Sera alongside James Stewart in The Man Who Knew Too Much.

But after four tumultuous and — in some cases, violent — marriages, she long ago gave up the company of men.

She much prefers her beloved dogs, though friends say she has always lived in fear that one of them might inadvertently knock her over or even bite her, causing serious injury.

Terrible twilight?

Doris had a wonderful, magical life.
She was once the biggest star in the world.
Pretty, talented comedienne and dramatic actress, wonderful singer..loved the world over.
No ‘star’ today can lay claim to that.

I admire her for choosing to retire early and have us remember her as she was in her heyday- instead of hanging around for crumbs looking like a drag queen, a parody of themselves.

For God’s sake leave the lady alone. She’s in her nineties!

Wow. I was 11 when I heard it

That was the time of a great divide appearing in popular music& its degradation: Lawrence Welk, Les Elgart, Eydie Gorme on one side, Bill Haley, Elvis, and Snoop Doggy-Dogg on the other. Not even music any more. Church music the same. Junk. No taste. IMHO

Ah, just pointing out trends over 50 years. As an amateur musician, with some training in performing voice, instrumental, arranging, directing -- seen it all. Anybody appreciating real, soul-elevating music is dying off The sign of a vulgar society looming. Feel it? the decadence? Doris Day not a part of that new stuff, I think

Doris Day (born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff;[1] April 3, 1924) is an American film and television actress, singer, and animal rights activist.

Day began her career as a big band singer in 1939. Her popularity began to rise after her first hit recording, “Sentimental Journey”, in 1945. After leaving Les Brown & His Band of Renown to try a solo career, she started her long-lasting partnership with Columbia Records, which would remain her only recording label. The contract lasted from 1947 to 1967, and included more than 650 recordings, making Day one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the 20th century.
In 1948, after being persuaded by Sammy Cahn, Jule Styne and her agent at the time, Al Levy, she auditioned for Michael Curtiz, which led to her being cast in the female lead role in Romance on the High Seas.[2]

Over the course of her career, Day appeared in 39 films. She was ranked the biggest box-office star, the only woman on that list, for four years (1960, 1962, 1963 and 1964) ranking in the top 10 for ten years (1951–1952 and 1959–1966). She became the top-ranking female box-office star of all time and is currently ranked sixth among the top 10 box office performers (male and female), as of 2012.[3] She received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in Pillow Talk, won three Henrietta Awards (World Film Favorite), received the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Career Achievement Award and, in 1989, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. Day made her last film in 1968.

Day has also released 31 albums, and her songs have spent a total of 460 weeks in the Top 40 charts.[4] She has been awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which debuted at No. 9 on the UK Top 40 charts. Day is the oldest artist to score a UK Top 10 with an album featuring new material.

Her strong commitment to animal welfare began in 1971, when she co-founded “Actors and Others for Animals”. She started her own non-profit organization in the late 1970s, the Doris Day Animal Foundation and, later, the Doris Day Animal League.[5] Establishing the annual observance Spay Day USA in 1994, The Doris Day Animal League now partners with the Humane Society of the United States and continues to be a leading advocacy organization. In 2004, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W. Bush in recognition of her distinguished service to the country.[6]

Day has since retired from acting and performing, but has continued her work in animal rights causes and animal welfare. She currently lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

Oh yeah, the last two hubbies stole all Debbie’s money. A judgment was entered against her last hub-—that would have bailed her out. But the cad refused to pay——she had to sell her floundering casino and most of her vast costume collection.

That Manson story scared Doris-—Seems Terry refused to
take on Manson as an entertainer at his record company.—Manson fancied himself an entertainer. Terry’s live-in at the time was Candace Bergen.

I always thought Melcher was creepy. Doris dated not only Willie Mays but also Sly Stone - whatever his name was.

I think Lucille Ball’s husband (not Desi) ripped her off as well.

So sorry to hear that Doris was rude to you. No one should be rude to a child. I remember stories of Alec Guinness being horrible to kids who approached him because of his role in Star Wars. I also remember Madonna actually hitting a kid after one of her B’way “performances.”

Judy Collins was once really stupid and rude to me backstage. Her husband had invited us into her dressing room (I forget why!) and she was so obviously bored to see us. Her kindly-hippie image is a farce. On the other hand, Glenn Close was very nice.

Melcher WAS a creep——he started off as her agent-—while married to one of the Andrews Sisters. But he saw Doris as a prime money-maker FOR HIM and moved in on her romantically.

She had the worst judgment in men-—he was the worst.
She said in her autobio, he would not allow her to make improvements to their home-—or even buy a painting.

She did catch onto him later-—wanted a divorce—but he managed to stay put by telling her “their finances” were too complicated for a split.

Little did she know.

He actually died quite young-—from a mysterious illness.
Some have conjectured he was stricken when he realized Doris was dead broke and he had caused it.

They both were staunch Christian Scientists—though Marty was raised in an Orthodox Jewish home.

LOL! She did me a favor. No chance of being “star struck” from that point forward. I’m sure there are plenty of welcoming “stars” out there but it taught me to treat everybody fairly and nicely until they show their true colors. Then it’s game on.

Desi Arnaz made the biggest financial mistake ever made in Hollywood—— all those I Love Lucy reruns that have made billions are not owned by the Arnaz family.

When the series was over in the 50’s Desi stupidly sold all the rights to CBS for about $4 million-—big money in those days—which enabled them to buy Paramount Studios.

Had Arnaz held onto the rights——the money would have been rolling in all these years—without lifting a finger.

What in this article makes you view Doris Day as worthless and an "absolute filthbag"?

Well,"50 dogs rampaging through her house" for starters.Typical Marxist animal rights fanatic.Of course you won't see her picketing at abortion mills in order to save completely innocent *humans* because then she wouldn't be invited to any of the Malibu cocktail parties.

For her late 80s, the photo above shows she aged very well.

Sounds like the Ruth Etting story! Marty was James Cagney’s name in that one. One of my favorite over the top performances by both Day & Cagney. “Love Me or Leave Me.”

Guess what? It’s quite possible to adore animals without being a Marxist. She is said to have conservative leanings. And I doubt very much that in her eighties and nineties she’s interested in Malibu cocktail parties since she seems to avoid humans generally.

You’ve constructed this whole picture of a woman without a shred of evidence that she is a Marxist. If you can provide any legitimate documentation that she’s scum or a “filthbag” or has led a vile depraved life, we would all be entranced to see it. Otherwise, frankly, you’re not doing yourself or your reputation on this forum any favors by issuing gratuitous and baseless attacks on a kind, lonely old woman who seems to have gone through her long life garnering love and respect.

Day/Cagney was odd casting. Still, both were superstars.....marquee names that drew in moviegoers.

Amazing that people still buy Doris’ records today........ records made years and years ago.

I love that PBS special she made-—w/ Perry Como as her guest-——snippets of it aired recently.

No it's not.It might be possible to adore one's kids, parents, spouse and siblings without being a Marxist but it's not possible for one to adore one animal,50 animals or animals in general without being either a Marxist or being out of his/her tiny little mind,a possibility I failed to mention in this case. But to me "showbiz" + "50 dogs rampaging through the house" = "Marxist" unless and until I see convincing evidence of serious mental or neurological illness.
