The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Looks good. My keyhole garden was invaded with the tranplants from ???, fiery little buggers. They have been sprayed with citrus then citrus shavings on top of that. Also put some around the base of the garden. I have 2 huge
tires. Someone put “trash” in them, dried weeds, some broken branches and their twigs. I put some dried oak leaves on top of that, then some compost, tomorrow I’m going to smash the whole thing down, add some torn newspaper, some soil, more compost, soil mixed with Miracle grow vegetable and flower stuff, smooth it out and plant some carrot and turnip seeds. In the center of the keyhole, I’m going to put
newspaper and fresh compost. I’m thinking of putting in a
few red wigglers, but I need to know I’ve rid the garden of
fire ants first. I dislike those little buggers even more than this administration and it’s leader.
I’m going to try that, I love butternut squash. I usually cut off both ends and microwave it, then add the good stuff.
But your way sounds great.
Thanks for the hint. We don’t get Texas style heat here, at least not in combination with Texas style dryness, but I sure know what variety I’m growing next year.
“Do you know how to tie a Hang Mans knot?”
No, but I can look it up.
I grew up on collard greens and turnip greens, cornbread with butter and yes, pepper sauce on the greens. There was also crisp, cut up bacon in the greens.
Were your ancestors part of vigilante groups who hung
bad guys? You sound like an acorn, not far from the tree.lol
Gotta go, Blue Bloods are on.
They are. Home grown are especially tasty. : )
We don’t make them that much.
They’re awful good with ribs!
I think I am the greatest grower of Seven Top Turnips in the world. On the day I transplanted so many plants I grew from seed, I was worn out when I planted these little turnip plants and didn’t plant them in enough soil in a plastic grow bag and didn’t think to stick a plant identifier in them. Later, I realized I didn’t know what plant was in there and they looked very small and like nothing.
Through a process of elimination, I thought they must be turnips. After I bought a large square container, I transplanted them in a hurry, thinking they were done for anyway. Well, they have taken off and every day they get really, really, bigger. Taller and the leaves get bigger, bigger.
If they keep growing like this, I’ll get a medal for growing turnips. :o)
Mmmm...ribs!
Honey,
I am so very happy for you and your turnips! (If I couldn’t be an onion when I’m reincarnated, I’d be a turnip!) One of my old buddies passed off turnip sticks as jicama when we had a potluck at one of my old jobs! Good stuff!
One of my life’s great mysteries ... do the aphids come first or do the little black ants come first? I’ll take your answer off the air.
I laid in a stock of incandescent bulbs a while back. Mostly 60’s, but I got in some 100w too. Figure in a few years I can sell them on the “black market” to back yard farmers. :)
I did too. For a while every time I went to the store I bought a box of 4 of each 100 watt, 75 watt, 60 watt(to boxes), and 40 watt.
Kinda ran out of space. Now I am just replacing stock as used.LOL
Speaking of cornbread, have you ever had spoonbread? I remembered it from my youth, so decided to try it last winter. Kind of cobbled two recipes together and got an amazing spoonbread. It was very like a souffle, and very delicate in flavor. I do wish I had written down what I did as I made it, LOL, but I always “cook” like that.
It’s even better the next day.
Don’t let this get around, but I do believe I have enough to last the rest of my natural days if I manage to live till eighty. I wanted to be sure I was never without my old fashioned light bulbs, and I don’t think I will ever run out.
At least I don’t have a bear family wreaking havoc.
Any more sightings?
The bear got a neighbors garbage can this week but now we have had a invasion of gluttonous Gray Jays eating my wife’s home made peanut butter suet cakes we put out for the tweety birds...
Late to the party, but in the mood. Beautiful this week; perfect Indian Summer, now that the garden (except Brussels sprouts, leeks, and carrots) has been freeze-killed. One more batch of carrots to come out tomorrow; those will be stored, rather than preserved.
The sprouts & leeks need to get out, too, as we’ve got snow scheduled on Tuesday & Wednesday, with HIGHS of 34-36, and lows of 24.
Have to get cracking on getting some tilling done, too. And more wood splitting. Plays hob with a couple of outdoor carpentry projects, as well: too much work; not enough hours.
