We spend a lot of time looking at cat videos, cat photos, all things cat. But what do cats see when they look at us and the world around them?
The photos below hypothesize what human and cat vision looks like. Human vision is up top and cat vision is below.

I think it’s misleading to represent what a cat sees without reference to how the cat’s brain interprets what its eyes see.
The eye’s perceptions may seem awful to us but I would expect a cat brain does very well with the information. If not, the species wouldn’t be here, perceiving reality so poorly.
I know they have better eyesight than we do. If I hold my cat and open the back door at night and his muscles stiffen I know a raccoon or another animal is coming our direction in the hedges even though it is dark and I can’t see it.
After recent security declassification, it can now be revealed that during WWII, American night fighter aircraft did not have radar, but were instead piloted by cats! Tiger Anderson is credited with bringing down twenty nazi planes while Sylvester Martinez has been credited with eighteen kills. These proud pussycats were truly some fabulous flying felines!
When I have to take one cat and get him shaved, my other cat doesn’t know who he is for a couple of weeks. The vet said it’s because they recognize each other by smell.
Idiots. They see idiots.
I used to feel sorry for dogs when I learned they couldn’t see color and were near-sighted.
Then one night throwing a ball to my dog in near darkness, I realized he should feel sorry for me. In dim light all their rod cells are a huge advantage and allow them to see like it’s daytime.
Agree.
Ever watch an exclusively “indoor” cat venture outdoors for the first time ?
They are paralyzed, until they can establish a zone or area of safety.
Hey! Me too!
Welcome back, 60Gunner! Long time, no see!
That’s what I’ve heard too. One reason cats lick each other (and you) is mark the pride with a group scent for easier recognition.
My cat thinks her dish is empty if it drops to only 1 of food left.
They see dead people. Really ugly dead people.
Can a cat “love” it’s owner like dogs do, or do they like us only because we feed them and spoil them?
Yes.
“Can a cat love its owner like dogs do, or do they like us only because we feed them and spoil them?”
Only my wife and daughter feed the cat or cats. I never do.
But with some of our cats, I have become close. They liked to be petted, and held.
I took some time. One female went from near-feral to wanting to be on my lap.
LOL...ain’t it the truth!! But I love my two kittehs just the same.
I can't believe that for one second. While I do believe that cats have tunnel vision, based on my observation of my cat and how she looks at objects below and in front of her, their vision is far more accute than those blurred images in the article.......
