The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
My mom used to do that all the time, just for the novelty of it.
My wife did something similar with the bottom end from a bunch of celery and some water in a saucer.
“...off the links you supplied except the packets that stop bleeding. Could you tell me what brand you recommended?”
That is Celox and is the brand the military uses in the field. I wouldn’t use any other brand. Here is the link:
Thank you! It was the only thing I was missing, thanks again.
“but found this interesting (with pictures) of how to root your own slips, plus some comments from folks who just planted the eyes, or whole sweet potato.”
Thanks for that link, I will go there and read.
Hello dear snugs so happy to see you;)
Prayers for your Dad
I saw my chiropractor yesterday, he was pretty sure my headaches were the result of my neck needing adjusted. But even after he screwed my head on straight, the headache is still there. It’s only better when I’m outside or near an open window. That’s going to be inconvenient this winter.
I’ve got my 4th batch of tomato seeds drying. Some sprouted this time, that’s not good.
Amazingly, I got a few ripe Opalka tomatoes this week. I honestly didn’t expect that, they’ve been so slow to ripen. I do like the flavor and texture, though, so I’ll be continuing to use them in my plant-breeding experiments. And now I have seeds to use, so I won’t have to buy more!
I’m canning tomato puree today, I’d better go stir it.
It's to late to plant the sweet potato as they need roughly 100 days of warm temperature to mature and the plants can not tolerate any kind of frost . If you have one sprouting now you can grow it as a houseplant though and take slips off it in late spring .
Thanx for that info..So, you just break bits off the vine, and root them next Spring, then plant them? Correct?
I was never a sweet potato fan, but have developed a taste for them after a friend planted 800 slips (that was the minimum order!), and she was giving them away, storing them, etc..it was sweet potatoes at every meal for almost a year around her house.
Good reading this post, but what happened to the rest of it? It stopped mid sentence. I was hoping my sugar babies would ripen while we were gone. No such luck.
Just got back a bit ago. Dog tired. Gonna reply to the recent posts and hit the hay.
Macrcella’s BEAN STALK Hurray. LOL. So good to hear you have some beans. Back from our trip - made it safely. We got lots done, but not as much as we need to.
Will have to make another trip soon before cold weather. Here’s hoping that we have Indian Summer up unitl Thanksgiving at least.LOL
I expect it will get worse now. Ever notice how our politicians here mis name the bills they pass? Affordable Care Act Ha Ha - that’s a joke for sure.
It should have been called the unaffordable insurance and inacessible care act.
Well you probably didn’t miss anything particularly important, but I’d rather not admit it.LOL
Checking in. Made it safe and sound. Totally worn out. Going to bed now. Catch ya’ll later.
the size of you bulb determines the size of you garlic you grow...eg...I plant elephant garlic and use the hugest cloves I can get....
Glad you’re home safe and sound. Nice to be back in your own house and sleep in your own bed, ..
We got 2 1/4in of rain over the weekend. It is our first rain of the month.
Put some bonemeal on the ghost peppers that were not turning red. Did that two days ago and have peppers starting to ripen now. When I pruned the big plant, I stuck the stem in rooting hormone and planted it in a 6” pot. It looks like it is doing good. Put some of the bonemeal on the meyers lemon that was not ripening, also. Maybe soon we will have lemonade.
Veggie garden is all cut and pulled up except one row on the end with peppers, sweet and hot, still going strong. Gunna lay down some compost and other stuff and let it simmer over the cool months.
Inspection time of the fleet, so all efforts this week will be getting the ghost fleet legal for another 12months, always a fun experience making three 23-34yo car and trucks behave like new ones.
Thanks for checking in! We appreciate it! SYL
Just catching up. Pineapple?!!! Avocado?!!! I am jealous.
You are all related to my parents.
