Surviving the Big Shutdown Live Thread
October 1, 2013 | Pan_Yan

Posted on 10/01/2013 4:43:00 AM PDT by Pan_Yan

Despite the palpable fear in the air I ventured out this morning and headed towards The City. Everything seemed calm- traffic flowing, street lights on- but I'm taking no chances. Even on Free Republic the normal early morning posts to the prayer threads and Religion Forum seem tense.

I figured the rioting won't start until dawn when the government workers who are oh-so-vital to keeping our society funcitoning on every single level don't show up.

Please post your updates as our society plunges into chaos, spins out of control, or whatever other cliche you'd like to use.

I love the roasting fresh brewed aroma of Tea Party Anarchy at work against a corrupted illegally usurped government, where is your birth certificate now Obama?

Looks like the shutdown has already caused some citizens' sarcasm detectors to fail.

For those of you in Rio Linda, 10 x 0 = ?

It’s difficult to spot sarcasm, especially subtle sarcasm, in text, absent vocal or visual cues.

I recall reading that entitlement spending is way more than defense though only defense spending is Constitutionally required...just saying.

Isn't debt service the largest single budget item?

I believe entitlements is somewhere around 40% of the federal budget. What is defense, 16%?

Philly morning abc ‘show’ (won’t call them “news” because they don’t deserve the name) showed a survey of “who to blame for govt shutdown?”

18% President Obama
46% House Republicans
5% Senate Democrats
28% All of the above

We see the consistent Lemmings (baseline 46-47% no-matter-what ObamaBots) for years and years.

HELPFUL HINT: Successful written sarcasm requires skillful, delicate use of hyperbole. Your post was a straight up assertion of fact.

Oh, on re-reading it more closely, it is clearly sarcasm (with the repeated TEN TIMES - that ought to have been a dead giveaway). At the same time, there are FReepers who are federal employees or contractors and it would be natural to see someone grousing about losing a paycheck, so there’s a bias to assume someone is being serious about that.

I find it dismaying and baffling that senate ‘rats have refused to negotiate or bend on anything and have flatly turned down any plan the house offers...And yet escape blame.

Traffic should be less, more parking available, shorter lines at reataurants. What’s there not to like about a government shutdown?

A year or two ago, the SEPTA bus system in Philly went on strike. I live in the Plymouth Meeting area - a first ring burb with lots of retail and other low level clerical jobs. Because the city is such a cesspool of business crushing taxes, lots of city folk with an ounce of ambition hop on the bus and commute to their job in the burbs. Well, when SEPTA went on strike, traffic flowed better than it had in years. All those bleepity bleepin busses mucking up traffic on the main roads were suddenly gone, yet somehow the stores remained fully staffed. It was an eye opener for me - now I believe that busses are hazardous to the environment compared to regular automobiles.
