A new political action committee is hoping to convince former Speaker of the House and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich to run for the U.S. Senate in Virginia next year.
Draft Newt PAC insists Gingrich, now a host of CNNs Crossfire, is Republicans best hope for retaking the Senate seat currently held by Sen. Mark Warner (D., Va.), who is vying for his second term.
We want a credible challenger to Mark Warner, and no one could do what Newt could do to fightand win, said Andrew Hemingway, a former staffer on Gingrichs 2012 presidential campaign who is leading the Draft Newt group, in a press release announcing the effort.
U.S. Senator Newt Gingrich would be an immediate game changer, giving conservatives another voice that would take the fight to the Obama administration, added Hemingway, who ran fundraising for the 2012 presidential bid.

So you recommend who?
Levin said Friday that Mark Warner only got his seat because people confused him with John Warner.
It's over.
Almost anyone else. Your boy neither conservative nor electable. I’d go with either of the nobody military vets already in the race long before I’d go with him.
Agreed.
I don’t care how old he is or how many wives he’s had. He still can explain the concept of freedom better than anybody except Ted Cruz or Milton Friedman.
If it was scrapped that would make sense
You know what the irony is here? We can't find any prominent conservative politician willing to step up to the plate in Virginia for a Senate race, yet TONS of prominent politicians in Washington D.C. claim to be "from" another state that they're representing, when it reality they live in northern Virginia 11 months out of the year. Liz Cheney pretending to be "from" Wyoming because he dad was Congressman there 30 years ago is a perfect example of that. Before Newt decided to reinvent himself as a devout Catholic from Virginia, he was another beltway pol who claimed to be "from" Georgia when he spent the vast majority of his time in Virginia. It seems to become pretty commonplace when these guys become comfortable and entrenched DC insiders.
Rick Santorum was yet another example, one of the reasons he got killed in his 2006 re-election bid is that he claimed to represent Pennsylvania, but he was living in Virginia year-round and his constituents knew it. I said for years that Santorum and George Allen should have swapped states after they lost their re-election bids, and Santorum could have made a comeback by running for local office in Virginia (obviously a senate race for Santorum is a non-starter after his failed Presidential bid though)
In short, since none of the politicians who admit to being "from" Virginia seem willing to do it, the only big name powerhouse politician you could run would be someone who has lived in Virginia for decades but claims to represent someplace else where they grew up.
You’re right. There was a time in this country when congressmen and senators spent little time in Washington. Most of their time was spent with constituents back home, where they owned estates.
I think we’re going to end up with a hapless candidate in Virginia who can’t raise money.
A good example of this would be Kurt Bills in Minnesota in 2012. This guy was a f&cking awful candidate. He couldn’t campaign at all, he relied on money from Ronulan donators.
Al Franken is now up for reelection in MN, and it looks like once again, we’ll be running a nobody.
People may have been confused in 1996 when he ran against John Warner, that was a long time ago. He was Governor (and sadly he was popular) for 4 years, everyone in VA knows who he is now.
This is the kind of thread that will get me banned. Because I cannot stand Newt Gingrich. He is an enemy of conservatism and a hero of progressivism. Noot needs to do us all a favor - shut the hell up and stay out of sight with all your beltway buddies.
I doubt that will get you banned. Very few people regard Newt as a die-hard conservative, although he has his uses on occasion. He is a little pie in a sky most of the time.
Bills did historically bad for a MN Republican. Paultards are almost always horrible candidates.
Jim Abeler is other one, hopefully he loses the primary. But the other candidates are lower tier as well. Major recruitment failure in MN.
Good point about Virginia, BB. Newtie ain’t close to the only guy who lived their full time and then stayed there after leaving office. I think Larry Pressler once considered a Senate run from VA.
You should have seen FR threads back in January 2012... it was full of "Newt, the last conservative standing", "President Newt Gingrich: Our beloved Republic deserves nothing less", and "Newt, the only bold Reagan Republican candidate" delusions.
and some us tried to talk them down from the bridge
I dunno. Tiny pic. Hard to make out. You need to post higher-resolution images.
Without Google's help, my feeble eyes would not know that the cotton head in the dark-blue jacket escaped a 1967 aircraft-carrier fire in the Gulf of Tonkin only to go on to become a national embarrassment.
