C.B. Bucknor has been umpiring Major League Baseball games since 1996. But over that time frame, he along with Angel Hernandez (a favorite of former Atlanta Braves great Chipper Jones) may be considered the worst ump in the big leagues. Earlier this season, Bucknor managed to punch out a batter with two strikes. But the call he made during a critical point in Wednesday night's Philadelphia Phillies-Miami Marlins game truly defies logic. With the score tied 2-2 with two out and runners on the corners, Marlins left fielder Christian Yelich hit a slow grounder down the first-base line. It appeared as if he'd have an infield single and an RBI along with it. But when Phillies reliever Cesar Jimenez took the toss from first baseman Kevin Frandsen and applied the "tag" to Yelich, Bucknor called Yelich out. The problem? The ball never left Jimenez's glove! And it's debatable Jimenez even tagged Yelich with his bare hand. The Marlins overcame the horrible call and won 3-2 but Bucknor's incompetence was on display once again.

The film has been running on various shows on ESPN all day. The worst part is the ump’s reaction to his own bad call. He puts on an “Oh yes you did!” headshake and all. The guy is a disgrace.
Totally reminds me of our completely incompetent affirmative action president. He’s made some of the worst calls in history.
I’ve seen some inexcusable calls this season. This one was pretty bad.
I was wondering why this worst umpire ever hadn’t been disciplined or fired. It occurred to me that maybe it was a case of affirmative action.
Yup.
I really don’t watch baseball any more, but that was really flagrant. If there was any doubt in the umpire’s mind, then they should have called for the slow-motion camera or something.
A jerk like that shouldn’t be there, screwing up the game like that.
Terrible call in a meaningless game.
I wonder what process the league takes when such a blatant bad call is made...?
He must have been asleep when he made that call...
Not such thing as a ‘meaningless’ game. If it was, it wouldn’t be played.
Congress should call a hearing.
Phillies this season: 72-86
Marlins this season: 59-100
You may be onto something there.
Looks like an affirmative action hire to me, and to question his call ,makes you a racist
I don’t think Bucknor was involved, but the Mariners had a call against them earlier this year that was as bad or worse. As I recall, it was a similar play, with the pitcher tossing the ball to the first basemen after fielding a dribbler down the line. Except the pitcher never even threw the ball to the first baseman, who feigned catching the ball for the out.
Cb Bucknor sucks. There is no question that he is still an umpire because he is black.
...similar to the manager of the Texas Rangers.
I did some research on the play I referred to in an earlier post, and I had it a bit wrong. Seattle was playing Texas, and the Mariners had a runner on first base. A bouncer was hit towards first base and was fielded by the pitcher, who threw to second base for the force out. The pitcher then continued on towards first base, stopping about five feet short of the base. The relay throw to first was caught by the pitcher, well off the bag, rather than by the outstretched first baseman, who had his foot on the bag. The runner was called out even though the pitcher never tagged the runner or touched first base. The first baseman pretended that he had made the catch, and got away with it.
Thank you for bringing up Ron Washington.
His team has collapsed in September two years in a row now, yet he’s still working?? What the ...?
The Rangers are good DESPITE his "managing".
Bucknor just stood there with his arms crossed and this smug, sneering look on his face. Lou just got madder and madder. Threw his hat into the outfield, threw first base into the outfield. Finally got tossed.
At a press conference after the game, Lou admitted that the fact that he just stood there, smirking at him, just kept making him madder.
