Help!
I have a Blu Ray R/W drive that I added to my HP PC. It also has the original DVD R/W drive.
The other day I ripped a Blu Ray disc and it worked fine.
Today neither drive recognizes that a disc is in it. I have a dvd in each drive and they both come back empty when I look at them in Explorer.
I have W8. The Blu Ray is a LITE-ON Blu Ray 3D Feature IHBS112-04 - OEM. It has been working fine till now.
The DVD is a the original HP install.
I have uninstalled both and rebooted. I have tried to do driver updates.
They both show up in Explorer but both show empty when I try to explore them.
I never hear the drives "spin up" as if they are reading the discs. I hear a faint clicking (not the typical click of death) as if they are trying to work but nothing happens.
Will be going into the BIOS after this post so it may be a bit before I can respond.
Thanks for the help.

All your drives are belong to us.

Just wanted to get those out of the way. :)
If the drives don’t even spin after a disc is put in, it sounds like either firmware, or possibly hardware. Although I can’t see how both drives would fail at the same time (and nothing else in the system would). Unless, your power supply isn’t capable of handling the strain of the additional drive.
You didn’t say, but assuming that the drives don’t recognize other media (CDs, DVDs), then you could try a firmware update.
Or, try unplugging one of the drives to see if the single drive works in its absence.
You first need to upgrade your system to Win7!
Are ya sure you have a BLANK BR disc in the BR burner. I’ve seen people do this with cdrs v dvds.
And when I say “unplug”, I mean from the power supply.
When a R+/R- R/W disc fails to read, I’ve found that cheap discs are usually the culprit.
I’ve had better luck with name brand.
Neither is blank. They both have movies on them.
They don’t recognize anything. I thought about the power supply but I’ve had them both in for about 5 months. No problems till now.
I've recently had a similar problem with an HD I've installed. The system sees it and doesn't see it simultaneously. I haven't solved it yet, but I haven't put a lot of effort into it.
I’m no expert, but maybe also do a registry clean out. Also, repeat your uninstall of software and drivers, reinstall, and reboot a few times. Make absolutely sure you are using the best discs possible for your blueray (sounds like you are). Of course, also do some online investigating/troubleshooting (which I’m sure you are also doing). Also, make sure your fan is working and that your board is not overheating.
I had a Windows update do this. Booting from a ‘live’ Linux disk will prove or disprove if it is an OS problem. If it is, go back to a previous restore point where the drives did work.
I have updates turned off. Haven’t updated since before I used them last.

I have W8.
I can offer you nothing but sympathy.
Are they SATA drives, or EIDE drives? The former has relatively stiff cables, the latter has the old ribbon cable. If it's EIDE, did you connect it using the same cable as the other DVD drive -- i.e. is it connected to the same motherboard port?
If both drives are on the same EIDE port, then you likely have a problem with the device select. One must be "master", and other must be "slave". There are jumpers on the back of the drives that are used to set the mode.
Alternatively, you can use the Cable Select (CSEL) setting on both, and it should automatically assign each drive the correct mode. But, if that is not working, use master/slave. For best results, leave the original drive at the existing setting, and set the new drive at the opposite setting. This will preserve the drive letter assignment you had before you started.
They’re both SATA.
Thanks. But, I like W8.
Try to boot from a Linux ‘live’ disk anyway, just to eliminate the OS as the problem.
How do I do that if I can't make a disc? :)
