Free Republic | September 13, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 09/13/2013 1:04:36 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

I attempted to go to bed with my wife earlier, but can not stand the pain just yet. We heard a noise, like something hitting the roof. Wife said it was a squirrel that fell out of the tree from hunger(tomorrow morning we go buy 50lbs) I told her it was probably Marcella pitching her "dang killer" from the road towards the house, getting rid of it. LOL

If ya dont have any luck with the PB, use their favorite; sunflower seeds, we'll give you some fer bait.

Didja plant all the Zennias seeds? My wife is the zennia guru, talk to her about them.

You might try taking it off in the daytime while you are up to keep an eye on the bushy tailed rodents. Then, cover it back up at dusk?

I have a small hand grinder that grinds to a fine mesh. It’s more of a backup for when the electric goes out for several days, which does happen on occasion. I think I paid about 50 or 60 bucks.

Most stuff a course grind is good enough for me.

Wow
Just so delicious, wonderful, pretty.
Jealous I am.

If I get 4 cherry tomatoes a week I am thrilled;)

If the peanut butter doesn't work, I have Sunflower seeds to try.

I grew the Zinnia seeds under the grow lamp. Think I transplanted two in each of two grow bags so I have plenty of extra seeds. They are “Benary’s Giant Zinnia Mix”. Envelope says, “A mix of purple, coral and orange fully double 4-5” blooms on long, thick, and exceptionally sturdy stems. High yield of cut flowers and a long vase life.”

These are heirloom plants.

“I attempted to go to bed with my wife earlier, but can not stand the pain just yet.”

Yeah, wives cause lots of pain. :o)

I’ll be glad when you can sleep in bed instead of the chair. I don’t know how you do that.

I hope I can bring you a “dang killer” squirrel soon.

I wouldn’t see the squirrel if he was in that area in the daytime. I’d have to go out there to see that area. He could have that planter torn up in between times I looked. Will have to get netting over them somehow tomorrow. Neither he nor his friends are going to eat my walking onions.

Thank you for posting the pics of your beautiful tomatoes. I thought I had a good crop, but seeing yours, I feel like a miserable failure :)

Re: squirrels, Have you seen those motion dietector barking dogs at Walgreen’s..would one of those, or maybe ten of them scare the squirrels away?

Probably not. I know around my house some of the squirrels chatter, and gripe at me, but then, my cats usually have the final word with chatty squirrels.

We have had a Great harvest this year so far! We really cut back on what we planted in quantity, and what we reaped is outstanding, maybe due to the amount of care each crop got, who knows?

Had a scare last night when the temp dropped to 34 degrees around 4 AM, but it bounced back before anything got hurt at sun up. Had no idea it would get that cold. No freeze/frost warnings from media or the govt weather station!

All the signs are pointing to a hard Winter up here in N. MN... Trees starting to turn, seeing V patterns of geese and ducks already! Guess Farmer's Almanac is saying the same thing...

Marcella, don't have anymore hints on your "killer" problem... Our cat keeps our redoubt killer/critter free! An option?

Are you talking about the occasional plants that actually grow a round seed pod on the plant above the ground?

Most commercial varieties don't form seed pods, but there are varieties closer to wild plants that do form seeds. People are growing from such seeds to try to produce potatoes with greater disease resistance.

Yes, the seed pods are bitter and poisonous.

Ask her what is the best way to start them from seeds.

I've got seeds all over the place! I've even had to start commandeering baking pans to dry them on. Mostly “Climbing Triple Crop” tomato seeds, but a few of my crosses, and one pan of “Dragon Egg” cucumber.

Now the bad news. I have HORNWORMS!!!!! In my entire life as a gardener, I have never had hornworms in my tomatoes! And, because of my work schedule, I have less than 5 minutes of daylight in the evenings in which to do most of my gardening, so there isn't a whole lot of time to go hunting for them. I did decapitate 2 of them so far, but there's evidence of a lot more to go.

Tomorrow's schedule involves hornworm hunting, laying plastic out on my land, and starting a batch of 2-Day Spaghetti Sauce, not necessarily in that order.

Got to have water, you may have to start using desert growing techniques and edible vegetation that can survive drought(is their such a thing).

Working on it. I've got a grape tomato that shows some drought tolerance, but I'm not sure yet if it's a hybrid. I've been keeping it going in my room for 3 years, and propigating it by cuttings. Next year I plan to grow out some of the seed I've saved from it to see if it grows true, and I'm also crossing it with a slicer and a paste tomato, to see if I can get a drought-tolerant version of those.

How drought-tolerant is it? Well, just before my surgery in July, I gave it a good drink of water. It was 6 weeks before I was strong enough to water it again. The tips of a few branches were just thinking of wilting.

Now, that was indoors, with a fairly constant temperature and no blazing sun. But still, it shows promise.

Umm, the potato fruits may be poisonous, but you aren’t eating the fruits.

Potato seeds can be cleaned and grown in much the same way as tomato seeds. This is where new potato varieties come from.

She sows them direct in the ground in springtime, with 1/4” soil over them, water well for a few days.
