The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

If I lived in a climate where I could grow year round that would be fine I would not need to can. Have been doing it since I was 18 (many moons ago).
The seed store loads them into the car or truck, we have a cart that can handle them at home. I have a couple of bags of compost in the back of my truck that I haven’t attempted to move. They got wet and no telling what they weigh now. I sprained my right wrist when I had my accident, so I ain’t real frisky about handling anything right now. I am using it, but not straining it.
As I worked on my truck this morning, there were hummers buzzing by me and all around me fighting and feeding on some plants my wife has right near my parking area. I you sit still, they will get very close, and there are pictures online of them eating nectar from someone’s hand. I could not get a pic of more than three or four at once, though they were there, they move faster than my finger.
I would use compost, mushroom compost seems to be magical stuff according to what I see online.
If you go to the website of your camera’s mfg, you can usually download a pdf version of your camera’s user manual. Then you can zoom it up to whatever size font you need to read it, in black and white. I do this for each camera I buy. I like having it on my computer. Plus, these cameras are smarter than I am, so I need the manual. I buy them from pawn shops when I find a good deal on one and they don’t have the manual with them.
I said: “When they put out the walking part of the onion I will move it to stay within the planter as that walking part could go outside the planter and plant itself in the dirt garden.”
I re-read that post and when I said “I will move it”, I didn’t mean dig it up. I meant just pick up the wandering onion part that fell over on the dirt and place it back in the planter.
Yes, use compost but what types of compost to give the potting soil mix what it needs?
I have studied this and Azomite compost (organic from Utah) gives it 67 trace minerals and the earthworm castings compost gives it what manure does (nitrogen, etc.) and if I add some mushroom compost with that, together it should be a very good organic compost replacement in that potting soil mix. I'm going to go with that unless someone on the thread shoots holes in this plan.

Are those crab apples on your beautiful deck or tennis balls for your border collie? I ask because I have 6 crab apple trees that are laden with apples.
I looked around the web for what to make with some of them and found mostly jelly. Anyone have another idea?
Also, are crab apples worth trying to sell at a farmer’s market?

Okay, okay, don’t freak out, I’ll put you on the weird/eccentric gardener list! Now, you will sleep better tonight.
Sometimes, the trees are welcome shade from the hot southern sun in the summer. In the spring, you can get some quick crops like lettuce before the leaves come out even, depending on your local conditions.
I think I have read about 6 to 8 hours of sun is sufficient to grow veggies. Also, keep in mind, that just being outside is usually brighter than being in the house in front of a window-which lots of people grow herbs in the window.
My daughter has some planters that are specifically made to attach to the deck railing, so that avoids shade from the posts sides.
