But surprisingly, not a single major hurricane, defined as a Category 3 storm or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale with minimum wind gusts of at least 111 mph (178 km/h) has directly hit the United States in nearly eight years. That's twice as long as any major hurricane landfall "drought" since 1915, and by far the longest on record since data began being collected prior to 1900. As of today (Sept. 12), it's been 2,880 days since Hurricane Wilma, the last major hurricane to strike the United States, made landfall on Oct. 24, 2005.
The reasons behind this drought turn out to be a combination of atmospheric wind patterns, how close to the coast hurricanes form and luck.

Giving us a break after Katrina?
Giving us a break after Katrina?
Let us ask the weather wizard Al Gore.
Nah. Global Warming reduces the number of severe storms.
Obama stopped them?
Because we managed to suppress the Al Qaeda controlled djinn being used to control the hurricanes?
Of course, they have manged to get some successes using tornadoes...
(Actually trying to work on a story along that line...)
Uhhhh...’cause the icecaps are melting and cooling the ocean...oh, wait...
Bush’s fault!
Karl Rove shut the African-American Seeking Hurricane Machine off.
Hussien told us during his 08’ campaign that he would heal the world. Didn’t anyone listen to our Mulatto Messiah?
Why indeed?
We had a good one in 2005. But the cesspool known as New Orleans is till the SOS.
Maybe God is having fun with the global warming folks who made the predictions of record hurricane seasons right around the fall of 2005?
It’s Global Warming..., or Global Cooling..., or good luck..., or Nibiru..., or something else.
Perhaps the “expert” at Colorado State will stop predicting 5-7 major hurricanes every year. Even with the bureaucrats at the National Weather Service naming every time someone passes gas, they can’t come up with any real storms close to the U.S. When will the sequester start chopping the dead wood from agencies like this one?
I thought Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. That was pretty intense.
We’ll, Christie and Obama haven’t milked all the political hype they can out of Sandy yet, and it’s too early for the 2014 congressional elections. Expect to see one in just about one year from now.
I just assumed there had been several but since they hit red states the media never reported it.
Global Warming reduces the number of severe storms.
Except when it doesn’t.
And then, it’s because of Global Warming...
God thinks we are getting enough disasters with Obama in office?
