YouTube:Awesome View of the Shuttle Launch in HD and Enhanced Sound

From the upcoming Special Edition Ascent: Commemorating Space Shuttle DVD/BluRay by NASA/Glenn a movie from the point of view of the Solid Rocket Booster with sound mixing and enhancement done by the folks at Skywalker Sound. The sound is all from the camera microphones and not fake or replaced with foley artist sound. The Skywalker sound folks just helped bring it out and make it more audible.

I'm not as enamored with the Shuttle as I am ,was with the Saturn V moon rocket, the most powerful ever, known to be Man's single greatest technological achievement. The Shuttle doesn't resonant within me the same sense of pride, awe and wonder of a Saturn V launch despite the Shuttle's considerable technological superiority and only second to the Saturn V in launch capacity. But this video in stunning HD clarity, the sound of the shuttle booming through the speakers like claps of thunder, provides a change in perspective.

What is most stunning is the moment of tank separation at 1:58 and proceeding video watching in amazement as the shuttle breaches the atmosphere headlong into space.

That is from an America that had dreams, and could reach for goals. That America is dead. I’d rather not see reminders of what once was. It’s too painful.

In this America, we calculate how many EBT cards can be distributed with that money.

Just wow!

I was visiting my old home in Los Angeles and made it a point to see the Discovery (hint: schedule your time at least a few days in advance).

It was stunning and moving to see and almost touch a working Shuttle.

We should have made a replacement before we retired the Shuttle program. That made us extremely high-fare taxi passengers.

The shuttle is awesome in the sense in that it’s reusable and was updateable over 40 years. They still could have been flying now if they wanted.

IN terms of power and such, i am with you on the saturn v. how the engine thruster funnels didn’t melt from all that power is beyond me.

I still remember the TV coverage of the Iranian hostages arriving back in the U.S. superimposed over images of the first space shuttle flight. I was 27 years old and heaved a huge sigh of relief that America was back after the nightmare of the Carter years.

Hope to re-experience that feeling one day.

A sad reminder of what we used to be capable of. Now it’s all about food stamps and welfare.

How true. :-(

Sigh.... The halcyon days of yore when America reigned supreme, the greatest country ever on the face of the Earth, the likes of which never to be seen again.

America, I cry, pray for thee.

Saturn V was a very noble bird.

And we can all say RIP to the US space program because these days NASA seems interested only in the James Webb..... more’s the shame

"Noble Bird".

Magnificently expressed, poignant articulation.
