Study: Dolphins can problem solve like humans (more “non-human person” stuff?)

A dog may be man’s best friend, but dolphins can imitate human actions, and even how they solve problems.

When a dolphin has one of its senses blocked, it can use other senses to mimic a human’s movements, according to a recent study. …

The study, conducted at the Dolphin Research Center in the Florida Keys, expands on previous studies looking at how dolphins are able to imitate other dolphins while blindfolded. To see if a change in sound would affect their imitation, researchers used humans instead of dolphins to make the movements in the water.

Dr. Kelly Jaakkola, research director of the nonprofit marine mammal center, said researchers were surprised by Tanner’s use of echolocation. “He outsmarted us,” Jaakola said. She explained that dolphins must decide when to use echolocation, “and that’s problem-solving.” …

No; it is still instinct. And are other senses that dolphins possess being omitted here, such as their electroreceptive abilities?

I believe they are drawing the wrong conclusion from their experiment. I would posit that their primary means of locating objects in the water is their echolocation.

A better experiment would be to instruct the dolphin to mimic a humans actions, leave the blindfold off, and introduce enough noise in the water to jam the dolphins sonar. Thus seeing if the dolphin could mimic the human trainers’ actions by eyesight alone.

Dolphins: a future Democrat constituency. First grant them personhood and follow up with a Swimmer-Voter act. Hand out frozen herring on election day and they will vote donk by the pod.

Every one is upset about the Redskins name being offensive to some aboriginal people.

But if I were a dolphin, I’d be pissed about that Miami team’s name.

Dolphins are smarter than we give them credit for, but this is not problem solving.

Furthermore, this is about ONE dolphin. For this to approach being a scientific study, it has to be done with hundreds of dolphins.

But that’s not the problem. The problem is the obsession with finding that humans are not really the most intelligent creatures on Earth, and proving that humans are really just the same as other animals.

If dolphins are so smart, why don't they jump over the cork line of the tuna net and escape? Jacques Cousteau was asked that question many years ago and said yes, they are very intelligent but they do not possess human intelligence. Big difference.

Every living thing “solves problems”.

Finding food or a mate is “solving a problem”.
