So I know a guy who knows a guy who owns a Walther PPK. He's asking whether to load FMJ or JHP, purely for self-defense. It's not his primary weapon . . . he just wants to know what to keep in the magazines.
Silvertip JHP - I agree
I’m in favor of the JHPs myself.
On the other hand, the 32 cal is at the extreme minimum of suitability for self defense IMO.
I picked this up off the net “32ACP Caliber:
One Shot Stopping Success: 50-63% (Actual)
Self Defense Rating: Fair
Recommended Cartridges: Winchester “Silvertip” JHP 60 grains 63% Winchester FMJ 71 grains 50%
The .32ACP, chambered in a pocket autoloader, is a viable choice when ability to conceal the handgun is an issue.
Penetration can be expected to be in the range of 6 to 8 inches.”
Frankly, I like the 380 better and have a Bersa, which is a Walther knockoff in actuality, which takes a 90 grain JHP. 200 rds, I have had no feed issues.
Delivered dead-pan like Bob Newhart....
Make sure it is RELIABLE with hollow points, burn some ammo through it, find what works best.
Damn, you zigged when you should have zagged!
Good Grief, you’re sounding like a liberal!
JHP expansion dissipates more kinetic energy...
... with more damaging terminal ballistics...
THINK-->>> ...the projectile STOPS!
FMJ may well go through-n-through --
May keep going a good distance with penetrating energy...
THINK: possible collateral damage/bystander injury... etc.
Just my $.02
Have you still got the “ big red lump, half-size of a grapefruit, with a black dot in center”?
I carry a Beretta .25 cal in a wallet holster. Nine rounds available and never a jam. The .25 in my pocket is worth more than the .45 in my safe. I know, I know.
I tried out a .38 snubbie & those five rounds were gone in nothing flat. Maybe I’ll get a Beretta 84 .380 with the double stack.
Pistol shooting used to be fun. Now it’s strictly training. Anyone know about combat shooting from in or around a stopped vehicle or from a moving one?
I figured that was a joke. My question was specific enough to try and avoid the “my ‘gun’ is bigger than yours” comments, but hey, it’s FR.
I concur I do not think you will get enough expansion with a hollow pt. in a .32 acp. And I do not think you are going to get enough velocity to over penetrate.
I carry a kel tec p32 with fmj all the time and think shot placement is more important in that caliber
Kwai Chang Kane (Kung Fu), I’m not... LOL. I did the best I could, at the moment.
No, the shooting was back in 1974, and the hematoma (lump w/ bullet hole) healed in a few weeks. I can barely see the dime-sized scar, now. No stitches; it sealed itself and didn’t even bleed.
If you are referring to the warning about lead poisoning, it's well-known among competitive shooters. I have a friend that had to undergo Chelation therapy, but he was an extremely active competitive shooter and firearms instructor.
Seriously, be wash your hands thoroughly after you shoot. Until you do, keep your hands away from your face and don't eat any food that you have touched.
JHPs. It’s unlikely a .32 is going to expand even with a JHP as it doesn’t go fast enough but you might get lucky. It’s not like a FMJ is going to gain you anything.
Reliable feeding, possibly.
Sure it’s possible, but that depends on the platform. I don’t own a handgun that doesn’t eat JHPs reliably and the only one I’ve ever shot that had a problem was an old .45 colt but it ate hard ball all day long without a hitch.
I have decided on revolvers, 357 mag with 38 special +P. There are some VERY interesting cartridges in that caliber, that would never load in a self-loader.
I don’t want to jack a slide, load a mag, etc.. No brass laying around either.
Yes. I shoot my .32s from a vintage CZ-50. It’s accurate and durable, but it was built for hardball and that’s what I use. I’ve actually never tried it with JHP.
When home I carry a Beretta Tomcat in .32cal. It’s loaded with Hydra-shocks and Glaser Safeties.
