Why Brickyard 400 Winner Newman Is Only $423,033 Richer

Ryan Newman won only $423,033 for his victory at the Brickyard 400. That would seem to be a low number since it is considered the second major race on the NASCAR circuit, behind the Daytona 500.

What happened to NASCAR? Attendance in general at NASCAR events is down. A recent article in the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported “The numbers don’t lie. Speedway Motorsports Inc. — the parent company of Las Vegas Motor Speedway — has watched total revenues, including ticket sales, drop annually for the past five years.

It may be that fans tend to come from areas of the country which have been hit harder by the recession and have suffered higher unemployment. But that doesn’t explain TV ratings, which seem to be flat to down as well.

Race event-related revenue at Speedway Motorsports’ eight NASCAR tracks has also dropped each year for the past five years except 2011.

Ryan Newman is in the wrong business, but it’s too late to become a professional golfer or football player now.

Figure the costs of running the team, and that’s not much of a purse. Clearly, the sponsor money pays for most of that, though.

The race Sunday had an usually high number of empty seats. Entire rows. I am wondering how much of that is because Indy is built for the Indy 500, with an extremely large seating capacity. I’d be interested in seeing attendance numbers by year for that race. Most races in recent years have had empty seats, but none like this one that I recall.

Drivers don’t get the full amount for a win. IIRC it’s in the neighborhood of 40%. That would mean the total for the win was about a million. That’s assuming the article actually got the number that Newman gets right and the 423K isn’t the total for the win.

1. They all race the same car
2. the car is not stock, nothing on it is stock
3. If a manufacturer wins too often they do what has to be done to slow them down. Other manufacturers don’t have to search for more power they just slow down the fast cars.
4.Restricter plates.
5. Dale Earhart died.

What do you reckon the overhead of running NASCAR is?

I can't imagine prize money comes close to covering it, even if you are in the top 5. The serious money is in endorsements.

That puts him firmly in the 1%’er category in Obamerica.

maybe the push, push, push Earnhardt got to be tiresome, especially since he doesn't seem to win....

the races need to be a little shorter...every race must mean SOMETHING to ALL the racers, not just those in the supposed "chase".....

you know what?....a little bit of anger and passion from the drivers would be appreciated now and then without worrying about penalties...

Fan base has declined and NASCAR quit reporting attendance. They have priced themselves out of the market just like baseball.

If I own the car and pay for team, while you drive, who gets the purse? All in the contract I assume.

“Figure the costs of running the team, and that’s not much of a purse. Clearly, the sponsor money pays for most of that, though.”

It’s better than a lot of other series, though. I don’t remember which year, but one of Ganassi’s teams won the Rolex Series championship with total purse money of $150,000. The team’s outlay to get that princely sum was around $4 million. Of course sports car racing is probably about the most extreme example on that end; generally the only way to make money as a driver in sports cars is if you are hired by one of the factories.

And outside NASCAR, most drivers don’t earn a lot just for driving except at the highest-ranking F1 teams.

NASCAR is just one more indicator, that Barry can’t hide, that demonstrates his “great economy” really sucks.

My sister works at a popular National Monument. She said they have had a lot of foreign visitors this year but none of them are spending any money. They come, look and leave.

If they got rid of ‘The Chase’ it would help attendance.

Once “The Chase” hits, if anyone’s favorite driver didn’t make it they won’t sit in the stands - or buy merchandise, etc. and then a year goes by trying to get fans excited again.....until “The Chase” and then you start all over again.

Newman doesn’t get the full cut - these guys race on contract - whatever percentage that may be for each team. They should be thankful they don’t race in England :)

NASCAR is coming back to reality, it seems. They went on a serious expansion binge starting in the 1990s, and vacated many small regional tracks in the South in favor of new venues in major metropolitan areas. Things were great for a while, but once the fad wore off the casual fans began to disappear and many of the hard-core fans found themselves priced out of the market.

It's sad to see, but it's hard to feel sorry for a "sport" that is much closer to a staged spectacle than to an actual competitive event.

Indy is not a good venue for NASCAR - the track does not suit the cars and it ends up being a procession.

Having said that, I've noticed a lot more empty seats at NASCAR events this year than ever before.

The Indy 500 has declined much further, however. 20 years ago, they would draw big crowds for qualifying, and now the place is almost empty on qualifying days. Nobody knows who the drivers are anymore.
