Israeli archaeologists say they have found the remains of a palace that they believe was a seat of power for the biblical King David but other experts say that claim shouldn't be taken as the gospel truth.
The discovery, announced on Thursday by the Israeli Antiquities Authority, revives a debate over one of the Bible's central stories as well as the origins of the ancient Jewish state. The debate focuses on an archaeological site known as Khirbet Qeiyafa, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) southwest of Jerusalem. Khirbet Qeiyafa has been associated with the ancient city of Sha'arayim, which is mentioned several times in Jewish scriptures as Judean territory.
For seven years, archaeologists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the antiquities authority, or IAA, have been excavating the site and finding ample evidence of a fortified city dating back to around 1000 B.C. That's the era when the House of David is thought to have ruled over the Israelite tribes.
On Thursday, the Hebrew University's Yosef Garfinkel and the IAA's Sa'ar Ganor announced the completion of the excavation. They said they uncovered evidence of a 10,000-square-foot (1,000-square-meter) palace in the center of Khirbet Qeiyafa, with a 100-foot-long (30-meter) protective wall. A pillared building to the north was apparently used as an administrative storeroom.

Ping, if you haven’t seen this yet. I searched, but I couldn’t find it.
It’s funny how so many relics have those little handles on them, and on both sides.
Kings get to have trees growing in their bathroom.
I think they are beautiful. Of course, they’ve been reconstructed, but even the glue lines add charm to them.
I’m curious about the design of the amphora (I think that’s what they are called.) The wine jugs. Why are they always designed with pointed botoms? That doesn’t seem very practical to me. You can never set them down, unless they have a rack to hold them.
I guess I don’t know exactly how they are used, transported, and made. If I knew that I probably would know why they have pointed bottoms.
Looks like democrats have been running the place lately.
Thanks afraidfortherepublic.

I believe David reigned 40 years. Difficult to know how they can pinpoint the find to that narrow a time frame. How do they know it wasn’t the palace of Solomon, rehoboam, or for that matter Saul?
The canaanite theory sounds like a desperate attempt though to deflect it from the possibility of a Davidic king...which it very well could be.
Fascinating story...thanks.
After it’s all cleared and ready for the public the Muzzzies will want to destroy it.
Thank you for the excellent and informative article. The part about keeping particles suspended in liquid makes sense. I probably would have had mine designed with flat bottoms, howevr, because I wouldn’t want a sand floor in my kitchen, or dining room. LOL I liked the one at your link that was “designed for show”. Beautiful. Elegant.
And nowwe know why so many of them are found broken. These are the equivalents of today’s plastic milk jugs.
I thought the article covered everything except the actual maker of the individual units! It answered a lot of questions I had but was too lazy to look for! LOL!
King David’s palace, possibly. more than your average fixer-upper.
This is just speculation, but perhaps the wine jugs have pointed bottoms to consolidate the “leas”, or the solids that collect at the bottom of wine. Just a thought, unsupported by research, but plenty of wine-drinking!
Am Yisroel Chai!
Thanks for the ping. Possibly King David’s time, but they still need more definitive proof.
See Monkey Face’s #13.
