WASHINGTON - A collision involving a tractor-trailer and two vehicles sent a car and its driver over the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and down 40 feet into the water on Friday night, but the driver was able to climb to safety.

Anne Arundel County Fire Battalion Chief Steve Thompson said the driver, a 22- year-old woman, was rescued and flown to Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore. She was in critical condition late Friday with non-life-threatening injuries.

Thompson said the collision occurred at about 8:25 p.m. Friday in the eastbound lanes of the bridge, which connects Maryland's Eastern Shore with the rest of the state, including Annapolis.

More often than you would think the EMT and ER do more harm than good. To protect the doctors, hospitals and such the employees have to sign non-disclosure agreements, kind of like our State Department.

OK just asked her. It's a valid diagnosis. Here are some possibilities, according to her:

• She could be in shock;
• She could have broken several bones, leading to blood loss;
• She could have a suffered a severe head trauma;

Those were just the few off the top of her head.

There is a sort of disconnect. But even a broken bone can send a bit of bone marrow into the blood stream and result in death by heart attack or pulmonary thrombosis. Without medical support, ‘you will die, my young friend.’ So, if you need medical support and you are severely injured, you're in critical condition ... think Evil Knieval after smacking the wall at Caesar's Palace.
