How did non-life-threatening injuries get her into critical condition? That caught my eye as well. Gonna have to ask my EMT daughter if that's a valid diagnosis.

OK just asked her. It's a valid diagnosis. Here are some possibilities, according to her:
- She could be in shock;
- She could have broken several bones, leading to blood loss;
- She could have a suffered a severe head trauma;
Those were just the few off the top of her head.

There is a sort of disconnect. But even a broken bone can send a bit of bone marrow into the blood stream and result in death by heart attack or pulmonary thrombosis. Without medical support, ‘you will die, my young friend.’ So, if you need medical support and you are severely injured, you're in critical condition ... think Evil Knieval after smacking the wall at Caesar's Palace.
