Free Republic | 7/19/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/19/2013 12:45:12 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Oh yeah, be sure to stand UPWIND when you spray the bleach stuff. Don’t breathe this stuff. I wear one of the little facemask things you get at the drugstore when I spray this stuff. Just because.

NOT a mineral block. Just a salt block. Yep. Salt is salt.

Thanks for the ping greeneyes.

What do you mean by cases? (of vegetables)

12 jars to a case when you buy them. They come packaged with clear plastic around them in a cardboard case. I split the plastic in the middle to take the jars out.

After they are canned, cooled, and dry, I put them back into the cases so that they are more stable, and easier to stack in the pantry.

“New wells aren’t cheap either. We all gotta survive the best we can given our situation.”

I pay $124.40 every month to our home owner's assn. That pays for natural gas, water, trash pickup, outside repair and upkeep including landscaping upkeep, 15,000 gallon swimming pool and our outside insurance.

I can use 1 cup of water a month or a thousand gallons and I pay no more than the amount in that one bill. I never think about how much water I'm using. Of course, we don't have acres to water in our gardens and people in here don't grow many plants - most have none. At this time in their lives, they don't care.

I pay more taxes for my land than the others do. I looked that up on the appraisal district and my garden is larger than all others. That is pure accident or maybe a God thing. This was the only townhouse for sale when I needed a place and it was sold. Two weeks later, it wasn't sold. I called a Realtor right then and came to see it. The other people who wanted it, couldn't get a loan so it went back on the market. When I saw it, I bought it right then and the owners took it and were happy I was paying cash. The house was mine. I've always thought it might be a God thing that I got this place.

Now, if I can just get something to grow out there...

Well that’s pretty interesting-is that the cheapest way to get salt?

Don't know what the cost is anymore. That salt was bought years ago. It's not like salt goes bad.

You have a pond where you are growing fish? Your garden sounds great.

That is true. I have been to a lot of different parts of Mo, but never knew water was so tight there, as I remember(maybe not so well) I thought you were somewhere near St Louis.

Mo. is certainly a beautiful state. I have spent a good deal of time there and really love the rural areas and small towns. A very picturesque state.

This source won't be free-flowing like table salt. I could be wrong, but I think cornstarch is added to keep it from turning into a rock.

The promised photo:

Red Bell on left; Giant Marconi on right. Same age; same supplier; same soil mix, fertilizing, watering, etc. This what I mean when I say I can not, and never have been able to anywhere, grow a bell pepper. Long, skinny types, no problem; and the hotter (ugh! I HATE hot peppers!) the better & more prolific they grow.

It’s a great site. I’ve gotten a lot of really useful advice there. Advice that’s saved me gazillion dollars in lost produce and hours and hours of my time.

If you get to plant and enjoy the tromboncino squash this year let us know what it’s like. I’ve got seeds and never have gotten around to planting them out.

I think it must be a God thing too. You will surely get something eventually. There’s a learning curve. We don’t have a homeowners Association thanks be. We don’t pay anything for trash or water.

Everything is recycled, composted, or burned. We asked the guy that drilled our well to go deeper than he had to, but several wells on the hill have gone dry over the years, so we are pretty sparing with our water all the time, but especially so last year.

Well, statewide we do have plenty of water, except for the recent droughts, I guess some areas have been impacted a little. It’s just that we have our own well, and we are in a subdivision out side of town that has half acre lots.

That’s a lot of houses and wells concentrated in a small space, and when you are paying to put in a well yourself, you’d like to avoid doing it again, if you know what I mean.

Well I would think that the salt has something added to it to keep it shaped into a block. We used to get salt licks and mineral licks for our horses.

I never really thought about it before, but if Johnny is using it, it might be worth looking into. In fact, now I’m curious as to what exactly is in it, so I’ll check into it after I get my canning done.

Nope, sodium chloride will happily form a rock left to its own desires.

Well, yes it will, but not usually so uniform as the salt licks. And they certainly look like they have added something to the salt.
