Prostate cancer found in half of men over 60 at time of death
Toronto Sun ^ | July 12, 2013 | Kevin Connor

Half of men over the age of 60 who were studied posthumously were found to have prostate cancer even though they died of other causes, a new study out of Mount Sinai Hospital shows.

The study shows that a large proportion of prostate cancer tumours are in fact not life-threatening, Dr. Alexandre Zlotta said Friday.

Results show there should be an improved screening method which would detect the disease based on clinical significance and level of aggressiveness instead of screening for all forms of this cancer.

The findings also say the common use of prostate-specific antigen testing for the disease increases the risk of detecting low-risk prostate cancers and leads to unnecessary treatments.

“In North America, men with clinically significant prostate cancer are offered radical treatment usually in the form of surgery or radiation and there are heavy personal tolls to these treatments,” Zlotta said. “But our study shows that in Japan, despite completely different lifestyles, despite a much lower incidence of clinically detected prostate cancer, and a much lower mortality rate due to prostate cancer compared to men in North America, Asian men have similar prevalence of the disease, but they aren’t dying from it.”

Caucasian men in Russia, who share the same characteristics as men in North America, such as a high-fat diet and reduced sun exposure, were used in the study.

The study also researched Asian men in Japan, who generally have a lower death rate from prostate cancer than men in North America as they eat healthier diets.

By studying two different populations, the research showed that the differences in incidence and mortality rates, and in genetics and lifestyle factors, the likelihood of prostate cancer was similar in both Caucasian and Asian men.

The prostate cancer in Asian men was actually more aggressive but they actually died from other factors.

The medical community needs to reexamine the definitions of “clinically unimportant” and “clinically significant” prostate cancer, Zlotta said.

“The study emphasizes the importance of understanding how many men in North America over a certain age harbour the latent form of prostate cancer, as this population is often over-diagnosed and over-treated, potentially leading to major side effects that affect lifestyle and personal well-being,” he said.

Because of beef, chicken, and pork - all contain too much anti-biotic and other chemicals, growth hormones, etc...The meat industry in the US is vile! On top of that, most Citizens don’t have proper nutrition - without a healthy gut - cancer will grow in every life form.

People in the U.S. are walking around almost dead...ask a person from another country what their meat taste like compared to the U.S. - there’s a BIG difference - most describe it as having a medicine smell and taste. Don’t want to die from cancer - stop eating meat, dairy, & sugars..replace it with veg’s, fruits, grains, and almond milk - plus large amounts of water! You will drop weight and feel so much better...that’s not s diet secret you have to spend $$$ on!

I suspect the levels of antibiotics and hormones in poultry, eggs and pork are higher and also less regulated in most Asian, African and South American countries than western ones.

Doctor said I would live longer if I gave up red meat, cigars and whiskey. It would sure seem longer.

I would rather die not knowing I have cancer then having to go through the hell that is cancer.

100% true, but try getting that through to people on FR between posting their next bacon thread. They get too angry and take it too personally.

“... use of prostate-specific antigen testing for the disease increases the risk of detecting low-risk prostate cancers and leads to unnecessary treatments.”

The PSA is very close to worthless. False positives, leading to unnecessary biopsies, are another consequence that our family has direct experience with. False negatives occur also, and are of course, a more serious problem.

There is a more productive test (kallikrein) in development, but last I knew, it was only available at the Johns Hopkins cancer center, and if you are there, it’s probably too late for a “screening”.

My personal approach to this has been (for multiple reasons) to switch to a very low carb (borderline keto) diet. Cancers are glucose-brittle, so running your body at least part of the time in nutritional ketosis is apt to be highly protective (cells that turn cancerous, die instead of growing and metastazing).

Up there with PSA in the pantheon of useless screens are the standard “cholesterol” panels, and TSH/total-T4 thyroid tests. They don’t measure what needs measuring and rely on faulty assumptions, which can be completely misleading in low carb.

I have a little boy I adopted that has cerebral palsy — I have no choice but to live longer and healthier...when I started looking at the grocer store - reading labels...I was like WOW- chemical warfare against the US public...I did it for me and him...and I feel soooo much better...and groceries actually cost less - because I eat less - but it’s all nutrient! It’s really the way to go....I’m not liberal either...highly conservative - and I want to conserve my health!

Are you daft? Do you realize that the incidence of thyroid conditions and cancers have risen exponentially in the last 40 years due to the overuse of soy products in our foods? Almost everything you eat today has soy in it, and what's the primary source of protein for vegetarians in the US? SOY!

I have non-Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It runs on both sides of my family, but since I was diagnosed 8 years ago, I cut back on soy significantly and went from being on the highest daily dose of levothyroxine to the lowest. Vegetarianism and not eating meat was LITERALLY KILLING ME!

Vegetarians and vegans disgust me in the same way that haughty Liberals make me irate. There's really no such thing as a "one size fits all" meal plan for anyone. I thrive on lean meats (pork, chicken, fish, beef, goat, etc.) and I consume a lot of vegetables and fruits as well.

While I agree that we, as a society, have overused and abused sugar, telling us to give up meat is like telling a shark to eat kelp. You ever looked at your teeth? Human beings are omnivores. We have sharp incisors and canines to rip and tear flesh, and we have large, flat molars to grind meats and fibers from vegetables. Neanderthals didn't survive on vegetables alone. As a matter of fact, during the long winters, they'd need the fat and protein from meat to stay warm and energized. That's not something vegetables alone can provide.

You only need to look at and understand human physiology to understand that we are both hunters AND gatherers. You can't put off an entire division of food (meat) because the mass produced markets taint the supplies. If you have land, invest in livestock. Raise them on your own with food you choose to feed them. A tenderloin from a freshly-slaughtered pig is bright red and tastes like Heaven when braised in butter and rosemary. A rack of ribs from a heifer you raised from birth is like a gift from God.

Just like the vegetarians are raging against Monsanto for their GMO BS, so should meat eaters rage against the meat industry for all the crap they put in our food. We want the same outcomes, friend, but to sit here and espouse a universal truth about human dietary functionality on a diet of only vegetables and fruits is laughable and dangerous. It doesn't suit everyone's lifestyle and has no longitudinally proven health benefits over a diet inclusive of lean meats.

chemical warfare against the US public.

Yep. Monsanto is a demon from hell. And after giving up meat, dairy , eggs and even alcohol (and I LOVED me the hooch!), you know what the hardest thing to give up was? Diet soda, believe it or not. Everything else was easy, but I kept going back to that crap like a heroin addict. Truly toxic stuff. Finally off it after decades. Can't believe it didn't kill me.

BTW, the problem I have with "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" is that juicing is like drinking pure sugar. Blending is the way to go. Blending keeps the "whole" food in tact. Check out the Engine 2 plan. That's my guideline.

I'm in the same boat, FRiend. Understanding and taking advantage of ketosis has saved my life. All of the sugar and grains we've been fed over the years turned me into a butterball. Once I realized that sugar and grain actually creates an inflammation response in the body, I decided to try a keto diet. To my amazement, I dropped over 150 lb. in less than 18 months, I was highly energetic, my cholesterol and triglycerides plummeted, I could run for miles without fatigue, and keeping to a keto diet was beyond simple.

With regards to TSH/T4, I will marginally disagree with you. My family's had thyroid issues for generations, and having suffered from it myself, I can say it's a very real problem. I do, however, believe that diet is the primary culprit in the destruction of our thyroids and our waistlines.

Cancer only became a big health problem in the 20th century, it seems. Was it our migration to modern lifestyles of leisure? Did our diets change so dramatically? Did our medical sciences finally start diagnosing cancer reliably?

An obese woman I know eats a little meat at dinner but tons of everything else throughout the day. I would say her diet is balanced. She is very healthy except for one genetic disease (something with her veins) that should have killed her by now. She’s 80.

The bacon people are reacting to the veggie image vs cowboy image. I’m surprised our muslim administration hasn’t outlawed bacon.

I gave up high fructose corn syrup years ago, sweeten instead with granulated cane sugar. It's actually getting easier to avoid it, as more people catch on. HFCS gained popularity just about when diabetes and obesity started spinning out of control.

The other thing I avoid is fat on beef or in dairy. I've been told most of the antibiotics settle in it.

I live on what's now sometimes called "pure foods". It's getting easier to do so, as more people are watching what they eat, more mainstream foods are okay.

It’s not the meat, it’s the sugar. Sugar feeds cancer.

Well being vegan/vegtarian in and of itself does'nt keep one from being obese or unhealthy. Tons of junk food is vegan. You still have to eat right. I'm oil-free, whole food, plant -based only. I love it. And yes, I know the bacon threads are a response to perceived threat. I get it. Too funny!

YEAP - Engine 2 plan - I’m eating a bowl of that mixed cereal right now! That lasagne - if dropped on a person from above - would crush them...I never weighed that dish - but the nutrient dense veg’s stack up!

Essentially, they've “discovered” something known or suspected by almost every man who's been through the “PC Mill”. It's pretty much the equivalent of the combination of factors that produced hundreds of thousands of unnecessary hysterectomies among endometriosis patients a few decades back.
