the Ruger SR22 is quite a good personal carry option

Perhaps, but for personal defense, heavier calibers are considered more effective for most people because in an emergency situation most people can't reliably hit head shots.

I'm a damn good shot but I don't carry less than .38 Special.

I agree. But other calibers leave more obvious damage, and or internal bleeding that surgeons will spot. The danger of the .22 is that they will think they got all the damage and miss a subtle nick—just enough to cause roaring peritonitis that develops after a few days.

“I read somewhere that the .22LR CCI STINGERs are lethal stuff. I don’t know if those are available and don’t know how the mini-mags compare.”

I’ve read about the stingers and sometimes had a choice of that or mini-mags hollow points and remember I thought the mini-mags were more lethal so got those. I don’t remember now what those differences were.

“There is an extremely important quirk of the .22 that radically increases its lethality, even with treatment. For some reason, it tends to bounce around the abdomen a bit, *nicking* internal organs.”

That is why organized crime killers used a 22 to the head - it stayed in the skull bouncing around totally destroying the brain tissue - that person was dead. A more powerful round could go completely through the bone and out and the person might live. Kathy Gifford, for instance.

I’ve seen an old U.S.M.C. flak jacket shot with several different firearms. The .22lr penetrated farthest.

Probably because it is a bolt action. None of the gases are being bled off to work the action.

They work in my Henry lever gun, too. It won’t reliably feed shorts, but it will feed those subs nicely.

I think the whole concept of a .22LR being potentially lethal is missing a point somewhere. Yeah, someone shot with one may die eventually. The question is will it stop them from attacking me right now?
I prefer something that let’s more light in.
But I can’t always carry a 1911.

“I am somewhat surprised that the Ruger 10-22 carbine was able to ‘find’ the board at 440 yds.”

Unless they’ve changed the way the barrel mates to the receiver it’s going to be pure luck. I’ve seen people spend a small fortune trying to make them accurate.
It’s a great, reliable plinker though.

Longer barrels are your friend with .22s

Add to that gain twist rifling, .221 bore, tight (bench spec.) chamber, and a bolt face that contacts to reform the rim at full radius and sand bags to shoot from.

Favored ammo makes 5 shots into .720” at the 100 yard, 1.6xx” on the 200 yards, 4.5xx” at the 300 yard stick, and have a 400 yd. group with witness signatures that measures 9.8xx”.

Its the wind that tears up .22 WRF. The CZ452 eats Annies most days.

You will also notice there is a rather wide variation of weight in a bulk pack of 22lr ammo.

After you sort by weight and rim thickness, run them through a Paco Tool for the nth degree of consistency. Makes bulk pack behave verrrry nicely(most of the time).

Will also make higher performing configurations on the nose. The ‘Nasty Nose’ deforms to nearly .50” under 200 yds.

Would you keep attacking someone if they had a six or ten shot .22 caliber handgun?

Probably not. So consider this. You are an elderly person without much physical strength and perhaps with a slight case of arthritis in your hands. A .22 semi-auto, 10 round handgun is very likely your best choice of defensive weapon.

Why?

You can hold it with both hands and the recoil is negligible. It will make enough noise to alert everyone in the immediate vicinity that you aren’t fooling around. So anyone intending to do you harm will immediately decide the old lady is crazy and I had better get out of here before she wings me in her wild eyed rampage.
