I am not familiar with Fannie Lou Hamer, but Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman are real heroines. They actually did something to help others and fought against enslavement of their people and actual hatred and bigotry. Jeantel is not in that category. It seems to me that this professor is attempting to paint Jeantel as a heroine. It minimizes what Tubman and Truth did with their lives if a girl who takes drugs, parties a lot, lies, and has a foul mouth as well as associates with a juvenile delinquent can be considered in their class simply because she was on the phone with Martin when he died.
Yes, this attitude is endemic. It’s whitey’s fault she’s fat, she can’t write or read, she’s still in HS, she an underaged drinker and admits to smoking pot and has lied on the stand or to the police. Feel bad for her because she’s a victim of low expectations and people that surround her perpetuate the victim mentality and encourage the sloth and avarice that has become a lifestyle.
