The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

I know I am older than you but our “upbringing” was similar. Did one of your parents like buttermilk? I can remember my mother having a glass of buttermilk and putting cornbread in it and eating it. I also remember me putting cornbread in a glass of milk and eating it and it was GOOD.
I just thought where to plant the walking onions. Remember, I have two wood planters on the ground in the garden and the squirrels and/or birds ate the lettuce seed out of both of them. I could put a few walking onions in the middle of the longest planter and they could just fill it up. If they tried to walk over the edge of the planter onto the ground I would yell at them to get back in their “house”. Or, I could cut them if they walked over the edge.
I really want the other planter to grow lettuce next spring and I’ll put net over both the young onion plants and lettuce seed to keep them from being murdered again.
Yes, I think it was similar. That’s because my Dad’s parents lived in a very rural area. The nearest town had a main street that was chat and only lasted 2 blocks, and virtually lived with them every chance I could especially summers.
My parents lived in a small town that was only about 10 minutes from Springfield Missouri metro area. So I kinda grew up in two environments.
Grandparents had a 20 acre farm outside of town, and they had a small dairy herd that we milked by hand. They also had chickens, pigs, and gardens.
No indoor water or facilities for most of that time.
Yes I do remember the buttermilk. Hubby still talks about his mom making clabbered milk, and buttermilk and he still eats cornbread and buttermilk.
He also likes to take corn bread and chopped tomatoes with juice poured on it topped by a bit of hot bacon grease.
Me, I never aquired a taste for buttermilk. I like my cornbread slathered in butter and a glass of milk to wash it down with.
One of my favorite quick meals is Pinto beans topped with onion chunks, accompanied by buttered cornbread and a glass of milk. For additional nevana just add sliced homegrown tomatoes and fried taters.
I use floating row covers over the lettuce instead of netting. No bugs or birds ever bother them.
Between my garden and mom’s, I expected the great zucchini invasion .... so I researched recipes from Zucchini Carpacchio to Zucchini Pizza Boats, Zucchini Chips, Zucchini Au Gratin, etc. Of course, since I am well-prepared and wanting zucchini NOW, it’s not happening ... such is life sometimes!
Walking onions? That’s a cool idea. Can’t have too many onions... or garlic...or tomatos. Please post a link. Sounds like you are deep into your first garden attempt. You’ll be buying a few acres out in the country before long.
LOL. Be careful what you wish for. You may get an invasion of the giant zukes.
My husband did not like black eyed peas at all so I didn't have them. I should buy a can with Jalapenos in them (I think there are some that way but I haven't bought any in years so I dont know), and make cornbread, cut up onion and milk. Gee, I wish I had it now.
He told me to take as many tomatoes as we want, but we already have a bucket full on the counter. I took a few that had fallen off the vines and spread the seeds in a patch of dirt in the back yard.

Your cover must be better than I have. It blows off and I can’t stay down long enough to secure it like it needs to be. I can get the netting on much faster and it stays there.
I usually cook dry pintos after soaking, but just in case I get a big craving, I always have a few cans for such emergencies.LOL
Well, I have raised beds. I throw the cover on top and it’s big enough it just hangs over the sides, then I toss some logs and/or rocks around the outside edge of the beds.
For the winter garden, I just roll the small logs forward till they rest against the landscape timbers. I have about 16 feet against a retaining wall, so I don’t have to hardly bend over at all.
When I have to get lower to the ground, I sit on a big flower pot turned upside down. I can’t take the bending due to lumbar issues.

Yes, you have to go with the flow. They aren’t making appliances to last these days. My Mom bought our current freezer as a gift for me in 1982. Maybe I have just jinxed it. Ohno.
