NASA has picked eight Americans, a mix of scientists and military pilots, to begin training for future space missions that may one day launch them all the way to Mars. The new class includes four men and four women who will join the 49 active astronauts at the agencys astronaut corps at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The new U.S. space travelers, which NASA unveiled today (June 17), could be part of the first crews to visit an asteroid or Mars, deep-space goals that NASA aims to explore. They could also be the first people to launch to space on a U.S.-built rocket since the era of the space shuttle, which ended in 2011.
In the nearer term, the new recruits could launch on Russian rockets to serve long-duration missions on the International Space Station, which is expected to operate until at least 2020.

I certainly hope they are diverse, as diversity is our strength.
Robert Duvall will lead no doubt.
“The new class includes four men and four women”
and probably four more who aren’t sure.
4 men, 1 of whom is black, 4 women. What are the chances that 50% of the best choices for this mission would be women? Are 50% of scientists or military, women?
Any muzzies? According to our liar in chief they are an integral part of our space program.
4 men, 4 women. Gee, how did that happen? Remember kids, it’s not how good you are, it’s your group membership that counts. I’m sure the 8 chosen are not only gender diverse, but also ethnically, and sexual orientation-wise.
Meanwhile, NASA is still busy pushing AGW while lacking launch capability.
America has become a parody of her once great self.
With our current Adminstration, who's to say the mission isn't to lasso an asteroid and crash it into America?
American Idol meets Government Science. :)
Somehow the 49 existing astronauts are all far too busy for a mission to an asteroid or Mars.
Must be that Muslim outreach thingy.
How many Arabs?
So which one or two are homos and which one is Hispanic?
What happened to NASA’s Moslem outreach program?
Talk about violent alien lifeforms. On Star Trek, they would be Klingons, only without honor.
So now we’re going to have 57 astronauts not going into space. great.
This was deliberately done as part of destroying the capabilities of the last superpower. Not having access to space, not being able to exchange astronauts off of our endeavor, the ISS.
I do hope all the known genders are represented - GLBTQQ[and more I think].
When it comes to astronauts, it is a safer assumption the black guy is on the higher side of the bell curve when it comes to iq/intelligence.
