Colorado secede? Counties weigh exit plan to form state of 'North Colorado'

Colorado secede? It sounds implausible, but the idea of counties withdrawing from one state to form a new one isn’t impossible. But some big hurdles – like the US Constitution – make it very difficult.

It’s an uphill climb that looks Rocky Mountain high, but a collection of independent-thinking counties may mount an effort to secede from the rest of Colorado and form their own new state.

The idea is rooted in the political rift that many Coloradans – especially rural ones – feel with a Denver-based state legislature that has taken a liberal turn in recent years.

A new state, if it formed, might be called North Colorado.

Would that mean that the rest of the current state would need to become South Colorado? How would the US flag look with 51 stars? Would this give similar ideas to politically restive sections of other states?

It may be too early to ask such questions. The road to forming a new state is a difficult one.

To: who knows what evil?

Decentralized government is the key to individual liberty.

Most things should be handled at the county/local level. Even having to deal with state level issues should be rare.

I think it’s fantasy. That being said—it is a happy fantasy. I would favor a more East West division— or to have Sodom—and the peoples Republic of Boulder become a walled state contained by the Reason that surrounds them—much the reverse of Germany before the Wall came down.

None the less(it was also done during the secession period),it is a precedent, one in this country, the only one that counts. Splitting off of a state is perfectly constitutional as long as the procedures are followed. As I said, Colorado state legislature has to approve the split, ditto the US legislature, then viola, the deed would be done, a new state, Northern Colorado.

I live in CA but love Colorado, I have been hunting there many times over the years. It is sad to see it slipping into the same liberal quicksand that has dealt a death blow to CA.

The federal government won the approval of the rump legislature (representing the parts of Virginia under Union occupation) to go ahead with the admission of West Virginia as a separate state. I think the people behind the formation of West Virginia were mostly from the northern counties (settled from Pennsylvania) whereas many of the southern counties of what is now WV (settled from the older parts of Virginia) still were loyal to Virginia and supportive of the Confederacy. I think there were a lot of counties in southern WV which did not participate in the 1864 federal election. I had relatives in the southern part of WV who served in Confederate units.

The Old Dominion was not renamed East Virginia...although I think the Perfesser in "Shoe" thinks he lives there.

LOL. No, I wasn’t going to CH in order to demonstrate that it was possible in the United States.

I was responding to Carryokie’s idea: Making the Denver/Boulder area its own city state (as it Base-Stadt) and have the remainder of Colorado as its own state (as is Basel-Land).

You know what, why don't other states think about doing this? Illinois would be a big one to split up, California would be another. The rats are trying to spread their influence to Texas and other red states, but if states can split depending on their political leanings, that would negate any attempt by the rats to continue to take states such as Illinois and California.

I say more states ought to think about doing this.

“The rats are trying to spread their influence to Texas and other red states,”

Actually, liberals are like diseased rodents. They destroy one state and once done, they move to another with better supply aka red states. Whenever I head to Napa Valley as an example, it’s not surprising you will find pictures of Reagan in most wine estates.
