When she was sunk by the Japanese (battle for Guadalcanal), all five were lost.
Not quite. George survived the explosion and sinking, but later drowned or was eaten by a shark as he was swimming alongside a raft.

Memorial Day originates with the Civil War. So here's a Civil War pic: The Red Badge of Courage. Bonus for starring Audie Murphy. Agreed, but also add the one good thing that I credit Ted Turner for, the adaptation of "Killer Angels" into "Gettysburg." This July is the 150th Anniversary of this pivotal battle of the US Civil War.
Original name for Memorial Day is "Decoration Day" to decorate the graves of the Civil War fallen. It was one of the first spontaneous movements to be done in both the North and South after the war and in 1868 through the efforts of the Grand Army of the Republic, graves of both sides were decorated at Arlington!

Because it is Memorial Day:
Taking Chance. A modern movie but well made.
Band of Brothers is my all-time favorite mini series.
For older movies:
To Hell and Back
The Longest Day
In Harms Way
To: Georgia Girl 2
From Here To Eternity
One of my all time top 5 movies ... and the book is better than the movie.
Same goes for another James Jone's book - The Thin Red Line. Waaaay better than the movie.

I'll jump in. The pool seems warm.
I like, in no particular order
Midway
Tora, Tora, Tora
Blackhawk Down
Master and Commander, Far Side of the World (not a "military" classic per se, but a great movie that seems realistic)
Pretty much anything listed above (there are a few that I haven't seen)

..."Gettysburg." This July is the 150th Anniversary of this pivotal battle of the US Civil War. A few years ago my wife and I visited Gettysburg. We rode our bikes around the Seminary Ridge area. It was early on a Sunady and no one was around. I sat looking down from the High Water Mark across the field of Pickett's Charge. I have never been so moved, sitting there in the still of an early morning, with mist lying low against the trees below the field, contemplating the kind of men that participated in that horrific battle.

Ahhh...Master & Commander, also a great one!
So many good films listed here. Memorial Day is one of my favorite "movie" holidays. That and Christmas. I love watching all the old movies played on TCM over Memorial weekend. I am grateful to them for still showing these great movies.
I rarely watch movies made recently because they just don't have the values in them that the movies from the 30's and 40's had. Many of those push the limits as well but you rarely see a current movie that does that have a gay leading character or some slime in it somehow. I watch these WW2 area films and sometimes I just want to cry...how far our country has deteriorated since. So sad to think how much the brave men and women who served gave up and how we have thrown it away!! Makes me sick

Patton and Saving Private Ryan are my two favorite military films that are connected to any degree with Memorial Day.I also love Breaker Morant and Das Boat but neither are connected of course.

Hamburger Hill....a under-rated Vietnam war movie.
Battleground......very cool flick.
Gettysburg...for the person who can sit for 4 hrs and watch it.
