PITTSBURGH — An Ohio Township police officer returned to work just days after he was assaulted by a group of men while he was off-duty on the city’s South Side.
According to police, the officer told police he was walking on 19th Street between Jane and Sarah streets when he noticed a group of at least five people walking toward him.
As the off-duty officer, 26, approached the group, he said he moved out of the way and was going to let them pass by.
The victim told detectives that a black male, about 6 feet 3 inches tall wearing a gray sweatshirt then punched him in the face three times.

So the Boston bombers were running should they have not been shot at? Whose to say they were dangerous anymore?
Plenty of unsavory groups of “yutes” of all colors and ethnicity.
Better to be politically incorrect than a victim trying to not be labeled unfairly.
I’d say, if the groups in question don’t like to be avoided by people who are afraid of them,
they need to clean their own house.
There are different levels of force approved to apprehend different suspects. Should we shoot shoplifters running out of a store?

Silly me, i believe in the rule of law. The limits of legal self defense are defined in law. They dont include shooting people who are fleeing from a minor crime.
My point being is at what point are you sure they are fleeing, 5 feet, 10 feet, there is a distance but what is it coupled with behavior - head down running or circling around you still in a group. Typically if fleeing roaches scatter not stick together.

No, you're not. And it isn't a matter of "rules," it is a matter of law. You shoot someone running away from you and the law will crucify you, charging you with murder. The law protects you only in the instance of self-defense. You know that but I'm wondering about the others.
If you pull your gun out and the assailants run away, you can’t shoot them. Legally.
The poster I originally responded to said that we would have shot them.
Of course, if conditions are different then you can act differently. But any self-defense claim must be based on a reasonable suspicion of a grave threat to your life.
Shooting people in the back who are running away doesn’t pass this test.

So you see some people who are assaulting your wife or your child. They see you coming, they stop assaulting your wife, and begin to run. So you just let them run away?
