PITTSBURGH — An Ohio Township police officer returned to work just days after he was assaulted by a group of men while he was off-duty on the city’s South Side.
According to police, the officer told police he was walking on 19th Street between Jane and Sarah streets when he noticed a group of at least five people walking toward him.
As the off-duty officer, 26, approached the group, he said he moved out of the way and was going to let them pass by.
The victim told detectives that a black male, about 6 feet 3 inches tall wearing a gray sweatshirt then punched him in the face three times.

6’3” is not a little thug Chief.
If I were this police officer, I would devote the rest of my career to coming across this thug. One day I would spot him.
This incident tells us all that having a weapon is not a bad idea, concealed carry is made necessary by incidents like this. Ask Zimmermen. He would be dead now if not for his weapon.
Blacks try to pick fights with white men all the time.
By not shooting these thugs the officer has simply insured that somewhere down the line there will be another victim. Probably unarmed and femnale.
But don’t misunderstand me. I realize that if he had shot he would very likely be in a world of trouble right now. It’s the rules that are screwed up.

Drew his gun, and they ran off? If five guys assaulted me and I was carrying a gun, the gun would be fired. And not over their heads.
Shooting someone who is no longer posing a threat to you is not self-defense.
This man, being an officer, had arrest authority, and should have used it.

They only ran off after he drew the gun. That means before he pulled out his gun, they were still beating him. Letting them run off was a dereliction of duty. If some people break into your house, assault your wife and children, but start running when they see you entering the room with your pump shotgun, would you just let them run off?
He was out of his jurisdiction.
Would you shoot someone in the back who is running away?
That’s the hallmark of a coward, isn’t it?
...and the next victim that they hit hard enough to kill or put into a coma... it is called prevention. You shoot one close enough you can argue that you thought they were re-grouping for another go. Better judged by 12 than carried by 6.
As a former LEO I carried everywhere I went duty or not, just like now.
Situational awareness, people. If you see an unsavory group of five people approaching, stay clear of them. Give yourself some room to appropriately respond if required. Walking toward said group is not a good idea. Even if your pride tells you to walk by them, think again and don’t go anywhere near them. I would walk a large arc around them, keeping them in view at all times.
Sad that one must take such precautions, but it is better for your health.

I’d do it anyway,
but there are some without a firm grounding in reality that would tell themselves to go against their instincts because they’ve been told those instincts are grounded in racism.
I agree that he could have shot them to stop the attack. But once the attack ended it is not a legal use of a firearm to shoot people as they are running away.
Even if they are black.
