From Ireland to the Balkans, Europeans are basically one big family, closely related to one another for the past thousand years, according to a new study of the DNA of people from across the continent.
The study, co-authored by Graham Coop, a professor of evolution and ecology at the University of California, Davis, will be published May 7 in the journal PLoS Biology.
"What's remarkable about this is how closely everyone is related to each other. On a genealogical level, everyone in Europe traces back to nearly the same set of ancestors only a thousand years ago," Coop said.
"This was predicted in theory over a decade ago, and we now have concrete evidence from DNA data," Coop said, adding that such close kinship likely exists in other parts of the world as well....

"The past thousand years" sounds odd to me. Obviously we are all related if you go far enough back, and studies of this sort are merely parsing minor differences within the same tribe. That said, I would have guessed that to find "all Europeans as one big family," one would have needed to go back perhaps 2,500 to 3,000 years, if not to the end of the last ice age. The rise of agricultural and, later, urban cultures tends to fix people in place.
Exactly. I remember reading Gibbon (Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire).
He talked about the very common practice, in ancient times, of lifting whole subject populations out of their home area and transporting them hundreds and thousands of miles to be sold into slavery.
Of course there was the subsequent mix of DNA from that point on. I always wonder if the geneticists who track this kind of thing, take into consideration that many groups got ‘transplanted’ in this way.

r1b1c2 here. Anyone with an R (most prevalant in Europe) pretty much has a common ancestor about 25,000 years ago.
No mention of the Basques, who are the odd men out in Europe, at least linguistically.

All Europeans are probably related to the half dozen ancestors who survived Europe’s glorious history: the plagues, the Muslim invasions, the Huns, the endless wars, the Holocaust, the pogroms and purges, the revolutions, the glorious leaderships of Napoleon, Hitler and Stalin.

It can be funny to poke fun at ourselves, our culture, our states and regions, etc. But when humor is just an expression of thinly vieled hate, the humor is lost. Today, the left mocks the “South” which is code for Christian, conservative, or traditionalist.
Not necessarily. In Spain there are about 2.6 million Basques, but that number is much reduced because of the “Basque diaspora”, mostly to South America, where Argentina has some 3.5 million, and Chile has from 2-4 million. Cuba has 1.5 million.
Indeterminate as to how many are “pure Basque”, genetically.
In any event, in Spain and France, they are not only linguistically unique, Basque is not a Romance language, but they still use some cultural artifacts unique to them, that may go back to the Stone Age.
One example is that they are the only people known in Spain or France, ancient to almost modern times, who made leather straps by taking a hide, and making a thin spiral cut outward to it, resulting in a continuous strap that was quite long and unbroken. This is such a practical technique that today there are some machines to do just that.
