Patients who believe in God may experience better short-term treatment outcomes for psychiatric illness, according to a new study.
Individuals who described themselves as having strong faith reported having a better overall response to treatment, said David Rosmarin, a clinician and instructor in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
"We found that patients who had higher levels of belief in God had better treatment outcomes better well-being, less depression and less anxiety," Rosmarin told LiveScience.

"Belief in God May Boost Treatment of Mental Illness" ... hence, Dr. Savage's corollary "Liberalism is a Mental Disorder"
The comments at the end of the link are frightening. I have never understood how someone can think there is no God. I, for one, would have never survived many situations without His presence in my life.
I can truthfully say the same thing. God is Love, and His love embraces each of us who loves Him and it can be felt and His presence is real. I am blessed for every moment of good fortune that I can say, “Thank you, Lord”.
As a retired military I am literally haunted by the ongoing horror of the rising suicide rate in our active forces. Suicide awareness training began just four years ago when the number of suicides outstripped the number of deaths by the enemy, in 2008. None of the intervention methods even mention the role of spiritual faith, the chaplain’s office is but one of many alternatives when one suspects a comrade is contemplating suicide.
New guidelines were issued last week - NO mention of religion in individual lives as a factor in warding off thoughts of suicide. Yet among those I talk to who are still in the service, one statement was nearly universal:
“Those who have faith in God, do not commit suicide.”
Food for thought: suicides in the military rarely occur in the actual theater of combat where sudden death is a daily possibility. They are most common here on the home front.
The Lord is merciful to those to whom He grants faith in Him.
We have half the country thinking believing in God is a mental illness. Some even make a living making fun of believers.
We are so divided, I do not see any positive outcome for the USA.
Of this I have no doubt. I believe it covers all illness.

Skeptical perspective: It would be a miracle if that was true.
Faithful perspective: It would be a miracle if that was true.
Having worked for 20 years in one of Harvard Medical School’s major teaching hospitals I’m quite familiar with the “culture” there. This familiarity allows me to conclude that this researcher has just signed his own professional death warrant.
