The comments at the end of the link are frightening. I have never understood how someone can think there is no God. I, for one, would have never survived many situations without His presence in my life.

I can truthfully say the same thing. God is Love, and His love embraces each of us who loves Him and it can be felt and His presence is real. I am blessed for every moment of good fortune that I can say, “Thank you, Lord”.

As a retired military I am literally haunted by the ongoing horror of the rising suicide rate in our active forces. Suicide awareness training began just four years ago when the number of suicides outstripped the number of deaths by the enemy, in 2008. None of the intervention methods even mention the role of spiritual faith, the chaplain’s office is but one of many alternatives when one suspects a comrade is contemplating suicide.

New guidelines were issued last week - NO mention of religion in individual lives as a factor in warding off thoughts of suicide. Yet among those I talk to who are still in the service, one statement was nearly universal:

“Those who have faith in God, do not commit suicide.”

Food for thought: suicides in the military rarely occur in the actual theater of combat where sudden death is a daily possibility. They are most common here on the home front.

The Lord is merciful to those to whom He grants faith in Him.
