The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Berry plants can easily take over your yard. We transplant them each spring. Grapes must be kept sheltered if they are not conducive to cold climates. Strawberries are eaten by deer (and should be planted out of deer range if you suspect they'll be passing by). Garlic should be planted in the fall and corn should be picked when ripe or the birds will do it for you. Green beens are a low maintenance plant and payoff is huge with only 2-3 rows.
Sometimes too I've planted items (like watermelon) 2-3 years and not had one melon to show for it. Other years they've grown abundantly. Ditto cantelope. One radish plant about three years ago has proven to be invasive and we pull all of them out of the ground when we spot them. My main garden area is 1 acre.
I know what you mean about those doves. We’ve got those too. We haven’t seen our bluebird out lately but there are plenty of robins hopping around. Every year they nest in places where predators can easily take their eggs. Sadly.
I think I’ll plant some arugula...have you SEEN the price of it lately? :-)
Yes, I was. I don’t think it survived the winter, because nothing green has begun to show. If not, I’ll have to start over and just plan on bringing it in in the winter. I have successfully overwintered it in the house before.
We have lizards that come into the basement during the hottest weather. They have found a hiding place that the dog can’t get to.
Found a snake skin there once, back before it became the garden/computer area.
Hubby has used BT. I have so far managed without it.
Linky did not workie.
Your garden is bigger than ours. We just have an acre for the house and everything else.
We started putting in the perennials and orchard in 2010, so we are hoping to get fruit this year. We have grown strawberries for 3 years now, and nary a deer in sight for any of our stuff. Still if one appears, maybe Hubby will get a deer tag and hunt from the back porch.LOL
We have a bunch of wild blackberries, we prune them back and keep them contained where we can throw a net over most of them. We have also planted some thornless varieties, this year to see how that works.
Grapes have gone through 3 winters ok so far. Last spring they got nipped a bit during a spring frost, but the still had a big return, except for what the racoon stole on the lower levels.
I plant my Garlic in the fall. I love fall planting and I am not fond of spring planting - Maybe I should just grow winter grains and garlic. LOL
No, but I know it’s pricey youngest daughter eats it. I ordered her some seeds for her small sq ft garden.
It’s a little bitter, but blends nicely with other greens.
Well, I have gone from strictly ice berg lettuce to romaine and spinach, and that has taken a while. One step at a time. Not ready for arugula yet.
I have been thinking about dandelions for the next green. They are all over the place without my putting forth any effort.
Been trying to get Hubby to try to make some dandelion wine.LOL
Check out my yard birds.
LOL. I’ve had to argue with a few seed companies about shipping dates that use the ZIP-Code to ship; that puts us into the wrong zone according to both the old and the new USDA maps.
We have at least 800-900’ elevation increase over their ZIP-locator, which instead of even being the town with the Post Office, instead is the geographical center of the ZIP-Code area, which is the entire county, plus a bit here & there. Typically, we’re 3 weeks behind the town on bloom times.
I’ll drink to that!
Well, he did at least agree to expedite the shipment, and since the weather is so cold anyway, I am hoping that all will be ok.
Of course they reclassified us from a 5 to a 6, and I’m not convinced that is going to hold, since globull warming seems to have stopped.
I could watch for hours.
Computer/internet-savy I’m not.

With us, it was getting things weeks too early, which can be a pain for bare-root or other live plants. They have much better storage conditions for them than we do.
Thanks for the video. Were those Turkey Vultures picking at a dead Armadillo?
