A weekend break from the monotony (Rock 'n Roll Vanity)
A mind in need of rest ^ | 4/21/13 | Baynative

To break the monotony of the media rushing to make fools of themselves over the Marathon bombing story I thought I'd bring up a subject that got me thinking earlier today while listening to a classic rock station instead of my usual talk show selection.

I lived through the 70's explosion of hard rock music and although some of it still gets me rocking in my own geriatric way. I thought I'd ask if anyone here had bands that were popular that they never liked, or/and still don't care to hear.

Good story. I had a layover the summer of 68’ in OKC from midnight to 4am to get to Wichita Falls. “Honky Tonk Women” had just been released. I played it on that Wurlitzer for four solid hours. I am sure the others in the bus station wanted to ring my neck but the opening riff had captivated me. Hearing “Honky Tonk Women” and “Gimme Some Lovin’” out of a Wurlitzer Juke is something kids today haven’t experienced.

Um, I mean Wishmaster by Nightwish, but who’s counting?

I thought “Honkey Tonk Women’’ was released in ‘69?

Supertramp had one shining moment of glory in 1979 with "Breakfast In America". That was a great album from start to finish that never gets tired. Everything before and after that one album however is pretentious art-rock.

Air Supply was a vacuous studio band that pumped out forgettable top 10 hits on a conveyor belt like they were Fig Newtons or something. Nobody today can remember a single song they put out but they somehow sold over a HUNDRED MILLION records during their run - almost all of them to lonely housewives.

Your story on Riders On The Storm was great. LOL. You are an excellent writer!

Kiss. They had cool costumes and an excellent marketing gimmick, but not a single one of them was actually a musician. Raucous noise and simple-minded lyrics. Totally overrated.

Makin' Thunderbirds
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Awaiting on You All
George Harrison

Heading for the Light
The Traveling Wilburys

I love Natalie Marchant’s song “Carnival”. Such a smooth, earthy voice. And the lyrics of that song tell a story that a lot of people can relate to.

But Queen did make Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the best storysongs ever made. In my opinion.

I like songs that I like, regardless of who does it. Like Changes by Black Sabbath. While I grew up with the 60’s & 70’s rock I really prefer some of the newer msuic now over the older rock songs. But that’s probably because I have heard the older stuff for so many many years now. My library now has over 18,000 songs. But I don’t really listen to music much at all anymore. Instead I listen to talk radio the majority of the time.

Spot on. Never could stand The Doors. Rush’s screeching still gives me headaches. I could tolerate Jethro Tull...but not a steady diet of them.

This is probably anathema to some, but I could live without hearing ‘Wayward Son’ by Kansas for pretty much the rest of my life.

Gotta have my Boston, though. And ELO and The Alan Parson’s Project were pure GENIUS, as was Pink Floyd.

No I prefer another Queen song. I can’t remember the name of it however.

AC/DC. They only made one decent song in their entire career, and that was “Highway To Hell”. Short, loud, evil, and right to the point.

Freebie! Thank me now and thank me later.

The entire ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ album by Pink Floyd. NO commercial interruptions. HD quality, but the original LP.

*SWOON*

‘Breath. Breath in the air. Don’t be afraid to care!’

‘All you touch and all you see is all your life will ever be.’

‘No one told you when to run; you missed the starting gun.’ (Dumbass! LOL!)

Thank you! I mentioned my disgust for anything Kansas earlier in the thread.
