Most Overrated Historic Figure(s)

Posted on 04/20/2013 7:55:55 PM PDT by MNDude

There are probably many people in history who have received more credit than they deserved. Excluding any US Presidents in the past century (that would be too easy), what three historic figures do you think are the most overrated?

Yes my Niece married a boy who has a PHD in physics from the University of Chicago and also a PHD in Cosmology.

While they do respect Einstein, they think Hawking is just an average physicist.

I agree completely. He did NOT cover himself with glory there. That was a real, honest mistake.

How a man with the nickname “Bull” could get taken in so easily by a red cape is still amazing to consider.

And then, to get caught up in that typhoon the way he did is still astonishing to me. That was a mess.

Halsey too, was far from perfect. But early on in the war, when things hung in the balance, he shined.

It is almost as if he simply didn’t know how to fight with an overwhelming advantage, as if he were more effective and comfortable in a barroom brawl.

Heh, maybe he was.

lol...I meant “honest to GOODNESS” mistake.

Not “honest”. When he went charging away from the San Bernardino Straits at full speed, he had been warned against doing just that.

MLK - a father of food stamps class and urban decay.

Hillary Clinton - “world’s smartest woman” who couldn’t accomplish a thing starting from her own bedroom.

Bill Gates - a “czar of technology” who actually never developed any technology.

Mike Gorbachev - a dumb commie who carelessly wrecked his commie-land and now pretending he is not a commie and did it on purpose.

Jimmy Page
Robert Plant
John Bonham
John Paul Jones

Led Zeppelin stole (as in gave no credit to) the foundations of their most memorable songs from others. Notably Spirit - an opening act who wrote the song which provided Jimmy with the riff (note for note) for Stairway to Heaven.

Whereas all The Who’s music was profoundly original. Which settles the classic “which group was better” question once and for all - for me anyway.

The invasion of Okinawa began on April 1, 1945. Truman became President on April 12. There were no additional island invasions between April 12 and when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The President that went with the island-hopping strategy was FDR.

I have always admired what Hawking was able to do with such a crippled body, but I read something he said that disgusted me.

I didn’t really know much about him, and kind of generally admired him, but when I read that, his views on God, well. It wasn’t just that he didn’t believe in God, it was his contempt for the concept of God.

“MacArthur was one of the most brilliant generals of all time.”

Little known fact: MacArthur’s soldiers had the fewest casualties of any commander in WWII. His men loved him.

Napolean overrated?

Have you actually read his incredible martial feats?

Read what his foes said about him

They sure as hell did not consider him overrated

Try Ho or Che or Fidel

You could make a case Patton was overrated far easier than Napolean
Damn...the man has his own level...like a Spinal Tap 11 for his era

Henry IV.....God love him....overrated......Cour d’leon too...

I appreciate Jefferson’s ability with the written word, but he was a weasel.

Smart guy, but sounds like a typical liberal in many respects.

Madison sounded like a wimp to me. But a pretty bright guy.

Of them all, Washington was The Man. He was far from the smartest, but he had all the other characteristics to make up for it.
