John Galardi, a fast-food pioneer who created the world's largest hot dog chain, has died. He was 75. The Wienerschnitzel founder, who was battling pancreatic cancer, died Saturday, according to representatives for Irvine-based Galardi Group.

He attended and graduated from Grandview High School just outside Kansas City. Nice guy at least when he was younger. Moved to California and decided to sell hot dogs because he didn’t like tacos.

The expression "Wienerschnitzel" means "Viennese cutlet," a slice of veal which is breaded. The only relationship it has with hot dogs is that
Wienerwürstchen, or wieners, also originated in Vienna.
The franchise was originally called "Der Wienerschnitzel," but it should have been "Das Wienerschnitzel," since the noun is neuter.
