Famed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking warns that humans will need to go beyond the planet Earth if they are to survive as a species.
We must continue to go into space for humanity, Hawking told a gathering this week in Los Angeles, California. We wont survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet.
Hawking, 71, has long been a proponent of space exploration.
Speaking at a 2008 ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the U.S. space agency, NASA, Hawking called for a new era in human space exploration, comparable, he said, to the European voyages to the New World more than 500 years ago.
Spreading out into space will have an even greater effect," Hawking said. "It will completely change the future of the human race and maybe determine whether we have any future at all.

My brother died of ALS at 44, after 3 years of declining health.
As long as they have Netflix wherever we go next I’m good.
I’m sorry to hear about your brother.
I thought the average lifespan after diagnoses was around 4 years. Hawking was diagnosed at like 21 or so.
I’m always amazed at how atheists are always so concerned about something that might could maybe happen a hundred years from now or a thousand years from now, but have little concern for if they have an eternal soul although we’ll all certainly be dead this century.
Yes but will it be around in a way we can live on it. Things bad for human civilization happen to the planet all the time (on a geological time scale). There will be another ice age that puts significant portions of the planet under miles of ice, there will be an asteroid crashing down with massive force and all the fire and clouds that implies, there will be polar reversals, and some day the sun is turning off. These things are inevitable, and if we don’t have a self sustaining section of ourselves elsewhere when they happen nothing else we did matters.

Those countries are experiencing population decline but in countries like India, Brazil, and other undeveloped countries where birth control is not easily available, population is increasing rapidly.
We just need Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck.
I’m sorry Hawking has such a horrible affliction but he has no more clue of what is going to happen on Earth than my dog Buddy.
There's some conjecture that the Carrington Event wasn't the maximum solar flare that could happen. Most folks don't think about the fact the Sun revolves around the galactic center while Earth revolves around the Sun. A galactic year is about 225 to 250 million years.
We haven't been around long enough to know what the solar system will encounter all of the way around. I suspect some of the geologic evidence may at some point give us clues.
I’ll bet other planets have better border controls than we do.... ;-)
Julian Simon.
Checkmate.
I don't see us moving into the stars in our current forms. Genetic engineering is one possible answer. The little green and gray men could someday be from modified humans.
We wont survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet.
He SAID that?
Thanks for the link.
It sounds amazing complex, but if it works it would be great. I especially think the mining aspect should be looked into.
