Let's talk about the mom who regrets her children. Last week, the Daily Mail published a first-person story by Isabella Dutton, a 57 year old mother of two who declared her children to be "the biggest regret of her life." Since the Daily Mail is possibly the internet's leading purveyor of "human interest in hating other humans" stories, it goes without saying that the article incited (and was intended to incite) a monstrous tsunami of scorn.
"A mother could never regret her children." It's a truism. But considering the life-altering effect of children on their mothers, it seems impossible that it could really be a universal truth. Isabella Dutton is clearly very unhappy. She feels trapped by the intense demands of her children, calling them parasites. I know lots of mothers who feel this way sometimes. But feeling like your kids are sucking your life force is one thing. Feeling like they "give nothing meaningful back in return"? That's something different.
Dutton believes she simply lacked the wiring for motherhood. She never wanted kids, but didn't want to deny her husband the experience.

I was on the balcony with my 3.5 year old, lifted her up and showed her the snow was gone and soon the grass will grow there and the flowers and the trees...
Then she pointed at a white bag across the street by the curb and said: garbage!
My little girl gives me much more than any other possibly could in life and without even trying.
Thanks a lot for making me snort 7up through my sinuses. lol
IMHO, she is probably the type of woman who is beyond self centered. I’ve known some... the kids “ruined my figure, ruined my career, ruined my sleep, ruined my luxury money, ruined everything”. I have the strong feeling that her two kids grew up hearing these words over and over. For that, she is a monster. My regret is that I didn’t have more.. tax chick size more. Being a Mom has made me laugh, made me cry, made me worry, made me tired but most of all... made me unbelievably HAPPY!
Is that soda less than 16oz?
It is now that I drank half of it.
LOL Good one
You got that right.
LOL! That’s a hoot!
Agree. I believe there are more people than one thinks that are like this. I can understand this. That's why couples should have addressed this situation before marriage.
She is no Mrs. Cleaver!!!
Well, we have that in common. I ‘ruined’ my father’s life.
Sigh...
After a certain age, children do NOT need you standing over them catering to their every need. They need to get out there. They need to experience some failures in life, and in the long term gain self confidence. This mother sounds like she was an overbearing mother would thought she missed out on some good things that made her happy in order to cater to her children.
Thats her own mistake. You can have children and still enjoy life.
From the quotes in the article (I gave up the Daily Mail for Lent and haven’t gone back ;-), it sounds like she’s just incapable of feeling love for her children, no matter how much she does for them. I wonder if she’s the same way with her husband?
I also wonder what kind of sick satisfaction she gets from telling the whole world. It reminds me of the other “human interest in hating other humans” story about the woman who was going to leave her husband once their children finished high school, so she could have multiple casual sexual affairs. Like there’s that much interest in a late-50s woman who’s an absolute DOG, even by English standards ...
I wish I could laugh, ‘cuz that’s funny.
Finally. The voice of reason.
If she turns out to be a leftist, remember there were early signs...Just kidding, couldn’t resist. (:
I really feel sorry for your children.
Reference caught.
You can be sure that the family reunions will never be the same. Some people can’t understand that maybe they should just STFU.She’s one of those.
Thanks. For what it's worth, my dad is my mom's complete opposite. He's been there for me through thick and thin.
